1) Kucinich for US President - Head them off at the pass

Flyby News follows a reporting strategy that tries to learn from our mistakes, and to act in support of campaigns that can make a difference. If you replaced the ring in Tolken's "Lord of the Rings" for the dangerous development of radioactive nuclear power, the classic takes on quite a significance. Dennis J. Kucinich has the record for someone we can trust to return this power to its source, and to help replace fear with love in a human evolution in harmony with nature, and not against her, or ourselves.

Representative Dennis J. Kucinich is the Chair of the Progressive Caucus of the Democratic Party. He was the youngest mayor in Cleveland, Ohio, and has a clean record of serving his constituency without special interest funds. Rep. Kucinich sponsored legislation for a US Department of Peace, and to ban space-based weapons. When President Bush terminated a House-passed Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, he became the lead plaintiff, with 31 other Members of the House of Representatives, in legally challenging President Bush's withdrawal from the Treaty without congressional approval. He is also a main opposition leader against a President Bush's war on Iraq, stating that: "Unilateral military action by the United States against Iraq is unjustified, unwarranted, and illegal." He is the one leader that will stand up to non-democratic elements, if enough people decide to support such a change for life and America's leadership for a united and harmonious world.

"DRAFT KUCINICH FOR PRESIDENT 2004"

On February 17th, Congressman Dennis Kucinich returns to Iowa. This time as a potential candidate for President of the United States. Congressman Kucinich is planning a five-day visit in which he will be making at least one joint appearance with the announced/presumed candidates for president. He is also planning an appearance before the Iowa Federation of Labor on Monday night, the 17th. After these five days in Iowa, I believe we'll have a candidate for president in Congressman Dennis Kucinich. As DJK told Wolf Blitzer when asked about a candidacy: "stay tuned"........

Dear friends and colleagues,

Congressman Dennis Kucinich is seriously considering a revolutionary grass roots campaign for the Presidency. As someone who has followed his career closely for three years, had the good fortune to meet him several times, and hear him speak four times, I can assure you that this is going to be a really major situation/opportunity if he decides to go for it.

Please consider supporting the initiatives to draft him, because this would really be politically constructive. No other candidate is entering the race at the urging of a massive wave of people who are awake and seriously fed up with the direction the country is being taken. If the already sizable 'Draft Kucinich' effort were to grow significantly, this would really contribute to him gaining traction and credibility quickly.

Experienced political operatives consider Kucinich's chances in the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries to be very good because he is just the sort of inspiring, personable, authentic candidate primary voters gravitate towards. He is an eloquent, deeply committed, real-deal person of total ethical integrity, deep wisdom, and with a profoundly inspirational vision of the deeper meaning and purpose of this country. It is hard to overstate. You just have to get to know him, read his speeches, and so on, in order to begin to appreciate it.

It is going to require a massive groundswell of activated people fighting for the future of our country, and the world, to overcome the huge challenges to running without a traditional 'money machine' approach. There is a web site, http://www.drafkucinich.com that contains some good information, including some of Dennis' great speeches. (I particularly recommend his Jan. 3rd speech at the Swearing In ceremony for his fourth term.)

He is really out in front as a clear national voice intelligently pointing out that Bush and Co. are leading us into a unnecessary war that will have grave 'side effects' for world stability for the indefinite future. He also is a skillful and intelligent voice on the serious issues of the rollback of civil liberties, on this creation of a 'fortress America', on the profound implications of this rush to militarize space, on the serious issue of genetically engineered food, and much more.

Best,

Bruce First
(In Washington, DC)

Deeper Rivers - A Kucinich candidacy would tread where others can't reach

The following is by "Goodsister" on Congressman Kucinich's appearance on CNN's "Crossfire" 5 February 2003:

"I just saw the segment, and they had some nimrod CA Republican sitting with Kucinich. He repeated the phrase "blood grudge" at least five times by my count, as in "Iraq has a blood grudge against the United States" as a reason for war. His remarks were real eye-rollers; he had his little prepared set of phrases, and that was the extent of what he could contribute.

Rep. Kucinich was magnificent. He made his points clearly and firmly, no matter how many times little Tucker Carlson tried to derail him with frivolous and irrelevant sidebars. Tucker brought up the Congressman's votes from the past, on trying Hussein as a war criminal, and something else I forgot that's related.... Tucker was trying to say Kucinich is pro-Saddam, but instead he just neatly proved the opposite. Kucinich said, "Thanks for making clear that I've never been pro-Saddam", and looked at Tucker like he's an idiot.

Ha!

When the CA Repub actually said that the Iraqi people would love us as their liberators, throw flowers and wave American flags, Kucinich pointed out that they'd be unlikely to respond in that way to Operation Shock-Awe, which would drop 8000 missiles on Iraq. Kucinich says that inspections worked for years, and they can continue to work. He says there is no reason to punish the Iraqi people because we don't like their leader, not to mention 300,000 American men and women. He mentioned the numbers of other countries that possess chemical, biological, and/or nuclear weapons, and asked if we were prepared to bomb all of them and impose leaders more to our liking. And when someone tried to talk about the danger Iraq poses to US security, Kucinich held up a copy of the CIA report to the head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which says that what puts us in most danger would be for us to attack Iraq!

He got the last word in, too, commenting that "Being the world's policeman is not what America is about". And, very important to me, Kucinich never forgot that Iraqi lives are as important as American lives. That peculiar, parochial view some Americans have, thinking that somehow our lives are more "real" or somehow more valuable than those of foreign people living in countries we can't find on a map, is obviously not a view Kucinich shares. He clearly sees a big picture, a global picture. He sees that in order to survive as a species on what's left of our planet, we will need to evolve into cooperation and friendship.

I love this guy. Did anyone else see it? What did you think? Can we unseat the Pretender with this man's energy and integrity?"

Regarding Dennis Kucinich's voting record on Abortion Rights

After reading Katha Pollitt's article, "Regressive Progressive?" in The Nation, Flyby News received another return call from Congressman Kucinich, who again asserted his commitment to maintain the status quo of the Supreme Court ruling, Roe V. Wade, which guarantees a woman's right to choose an abortion, safely and legally. The question of Kucinich's pro-life record relates to his representing one of the highest concentration of Catholic voters of any Congressional district, his personal beliefs about life and conception, and his challenging whether the government should fund abortions. The real issue, he said, is about not judging one another, but to begin thinking in a new way to help heal this issue, which has polarized many Americans for so long. He expressed his interests in support of one's rights for pro-choice and for pro-life. Dennis Kucinich said that some of his staff disagree with him on this or other issues, and that he prefers it that way, for diversity in discussion and consideration. He said that if he should decide to run for President, he would have a position paper available for people to know where he stands on this and other important issues.

The following was received from a Pioneer Valley activist list serve:
http://www.yahoogroups.com/messages/AriseAction

Hi all -- when I receive the information on who voted "no" on the vote to support Israel in Congress, I was dismayed to see that Congressman Dennis Kucinich was not on that list. I assumed he had, therefore, voted "yes". So I emailed him the following (this was not my first email to him; the others were supportive ):

Congressman: I was shocked to learn that you supported the Israeli forces in the recent vote in which our legislative bodies voted overwhelmingly in favor.

Why?

Why would a man of peace be in favor of a pointless war? A war that breeds war and atrocities on both sides? I can only come to one conclusion on my own and that is you have played USA politics.

I am so dreadfully disappointed. You have been a shining light for many of us...this latest decision on your part contradicts so much of what you have said. Your light has dimmed dramatically.

If you would respond I would be appreciative.

Thank you.
Emily

Last night when I came home there was a telephone message from him, saying he had not voted "yes" and would call me back on Thursday to talk about what he did do. Thursday morning he did call. I was delightfully surprised. He is not ordinary. Anyway, he read to me what he read to his colleagues on the floor of the House. I asked that he email it to me and he did. This is what he said:

Statement of Congressman Dennis Kucinich

On H.R. 392

I declare my support for the State of Israel and for the security of the Israeli people. I also declare my support for a Palestinian state and for the security of the Palestinian people. So I will vote present today because I believe the security of Israel requires the security of the Palestinians.

I will vote present because I believe the United States can do better through honest brokering, and a principled commitment to peaceful coexistence. Today we are missing an opportunity to lead people of the Middle East toward a secure and stable future together.

This resolution equates Israel¹s dilemma, which is the outcome of the Palestinian¹s struggle for self-determination with the United States¹ campaign against the criminal organization, Al Queda. Unfortunately, our own policy is undefined, amorphous, without borders, without limits, and without congressional oversight. For this Congress to place the historic Israeli-Palestinian conflict into the context of the current fashion of US global policy pitches Israelis and Palestinians alike into a black hole of policy without purpose, and conflict without resolution.

The same humanity that requires us to acknowledge with profound concerns the pain and suffering of the people of Israel requires a similar expression for the pain and suffering of the Palestinians. When our brothers and sisters are fighting to the death, instead of declaring solidarity with one against the other, should we not declare solidarity with both for peace, so that both may live in security and freedom?

If we seek to require the Palestinians, who do not have their own state, to adhere to a higher standard of conduct, should we not also ask Israel, with over a half century experience with statehood, to adhere to the basic standard of conduct, including meeting the requirements of international law?

There is a role for Congress and the Administration in helping to bring a lasting peace in the Middle East, however, this resolution does not create that role. After today we will still need to determine a course of action to bring about peace. This course will require multilateral diplomacy, which strengthens cooperation among all countries in the region. It will require focused, unwavering attention. It will require sufficient financial resources. And it will require that our nation have the political will to bring about a true, a fair, and a sustainable resolution of the conflict.

When this Congress enters into the conflict and takes sides between Israel and Palestine we do not help to achieve peace, but the opposite. Similarly, the Administration should consider that when it conducts a war against terrorism without limits the principle of war is quickened everywhere in the world, including the Middle East. When it talks incessantly about invading Iraq, the tempo of war is picked up everywhere. If we truly want peace in the Middle East this resolution is counter productive. I will vote present because I do not believe that this resolution dignifies the role towards creating peace, which this Congress can and must fulfill.

3) Sharon's party votes to reject Palestinian state

Party Rebuffs Sharon Over Palestinians
Los Angeles Times

May 13, 2002

Israel: A Likud panel rejects the concept of statehood, contradicting its premier's views. U.S. peacemaking efforts could be hampered.

By MARY CURTIUS

TEL AVIV--Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a humiliating defeat Sunday at the hands of his archrival, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as the central committee of their Likud Party ruled out the establishment of a Palestinian state. The party's decision, formalized in a resolution backed by Netanyahu, directly contradicted Sharon's own stated acceptance of a Palestinian state as the eventual conclusion of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. It came as Sharon faces mounting domestic and international pressure to find a way to stop more than 19 months of bloodshed and launch talks with the Palestinians. It also seems certain to complicate the Bush administration's efforts to arrange a Mideast peace conference.

4) US military proposes illegal bio-weapons research

According to documents unearthed by a nonprofit government watchdog, the United States military has proposed the development of biological weapons that would violate international treaties and federal law. In fact, they may have already developed some of these illegal, treaty-busting bioweapons. Using the Freedom of Information Act, the Sunshine Project has recently pried loose some damning documents from the Marine Corps, which seems to be overseeing this area of research.

5) Agent sues FBI over ignoring pre-September 11 activities

An FBI agent in Chicago has accused his superiors of ignoring the pre-September 11 criminal activities of alleged US associates of the Islamic Resistance Movement, the militant organization also known as Hamas. The agent also alleged that the Bureau steered agents away from filing criminal cases that he believes could have disrupted Hamas's operations in this country. Last Thursday, Robert G. Wright, a 12-year FBI veteran, filed a lawsuit against the Bureau in US District Court in Washington. He accused the FBI of violating his First Amendment rights by prohibiting him from making his complaints public.

6) The siege of Baghdad

May 11 2002

The US obsession with toppling Saddam Hussein is growing despite European doubts and shaky justification, writes Gay Alcorn.

The last remaining suspicion that Saddam Hussein was involved in the death of 3000 Americans on September 11 seemed to be put to rest. ''US officials" scotched the ''Iraqi connection" in a series of leaks this week, saying they no longer believed the hijackers' ringleader, Mohammed Atta, held secret meetings with an Iraqi intelligence agent in the Czech capital of Prague in April last year.
