Post Cassini Flyby News features reports regarding human rights, justice, disarmament of weapons of mass destruction, peace in space, environmental and indigenous issues. Leonard Peltier is an indigenous rights activist who has been unjustly imprisoned for over 24 years despite the total lack of evidence against him. He is considered by Amnesty International to be a political prisoner who should be "immediately and unconditionally released." Formerly withheld evidence casting serious doubt on Mr. Peltier's guilt forced the government to admit that they could not prove who was actually guilty of the crime he was convicted of and yet, he remains behind bars. Because of clear indications that he was unfairly targeted due to his key role in the American Indian Movement, Leonard Peltier is often seen as a symbol of the US government's attempts to silence those seeking positive change for Native communities. Now Leonard Peltier is facing the most critical time ever in his campaign for freedom and indeed his life. His only chance for a near future release lies in the hands of President Clinton through a grant of Executive Clemency. Now is the time for us to join our voices together in making a call for justice too loud to be ignored. December 10 will mark the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Leonard Peltier has been officially recognized as a Human Rights Defender by the United Nations, and we must insist that the US apply human rights to its original peoples. Come join the Leonard Peltier March For Freedom on Dec.10 in New York City at 9:30 a.m. (Exact location to be announced.)

1) Hopeful Message from Leonard via Harvey Arden

>Subject: HOPEFUL NEWS FROM LEONARD PELTIER...

EVERYONE--

Leonard called me from Leavenworth just a few moments ago (Sun 10:45AM)... he's in unusually high spirits, and says he has reason to believe that "something good" is about to happen soon. He said he couldn't say more right now, but he's very hopeful of getting out. I'm tremendously heartened to hear that from Leonard. He's rarely sounded so optimistic.

As you may know, I've been running a "WRITE-IN LEONARD PELTIER FOR PRESIDENT CAMPAIGN" all year, winning commitments from many many thousands of people around the country to cast their protest ballots for Leonard.

I asked him just now if I should continue with this "LEONARD 4 PREZ CAMPAIGN," and he tells me, "Harvey, I appreciate your efforts, but tell all those who were going to vote for me that I release them from their commitment...and suggest to them, if they want to help me, to vote for Al Gore for President...that's what I would do if I could vote, and that's what I hope every one of my supporters will do..."

PLEASE send this message TODAY to ALL you know!

=============
Editor's Note:

This November 19 marks the 7th year of the filing of the Executive Clemency Petition by Leonard Peltier. Although Bill Clinton's campaign office in 1992 gave clear indications that he would give this case immediate "fair and impartial review" the case has been stagnant. There is so much corruption in the "Law of the Land" with White House politics, and the threat of the escalation of the arms race in space, that Flyby News cannot 100% endorse voting for Al Gore for President. However, due to the reality that Ralph Nader cannot win as President even with a majority vote (due to the electorate system) this year, and that George W. Bush supports death, oil and star wars at a much more furious pace than Al Gore, Flyby News suggests voting for Al Gore in any state where the elections are close between Gore and Bush, AND VOTE FOR NADER/LADUKE FOR PRESIDENT in all other states in support of the Green Party's platform and future in politics.

3) Benefit Music Event to Support Clemency for Leonard Peltier

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton, MA October 19, 2000

The Leonard Peltier Support Group of Greater New England (LPSG/GNE) is sponsoring a series of music benefits and meetings in support of Native American political activist, Leonard Peltier. The first upcoming program is at the Iron Horse Music Hall Thursday, October 19, 2000 from 7:00 P.M. to 1:00 A.M. Admission is $10 in advance and $12 at the door. The program features the diverse music of AYE, Dredi, Gaia Roots and Electric Blue and the Kosmic Truth, spanning the styles of folk, world beat, reggae, harmonious vocals, rhythm and blues.

Many believe that Leonard Peltier has been unjustly imprisoned for over 24 years. Amnesty International considers him a political prisoner who should be "immediately and unconditionally released." Because of clear indications that he was unfairly targeted due to his key role in the American Indian Movement, Leonard Peltier is often seen as a symbol of the US government's attempts to silence those seeking to protect the interests of Native land and communities. Now Leonard Peltier is facing the most critical time ever in his campaign for freedom and indeed his life. His only chance for a near future release lies in the hands of President Clinton through a grant of Executive Clemency.

"The purpose of the benefit," said organizer Jonathan Mark, "is to build momentum and support for an international action on Leonard Peltier's behalf." Many individuals from the pioneer region will be joining people from around the world to participate in a "Free Peltier March" on December 10 at the United Nations in New York City. December 10 marks the anniversary for the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The United Nations have recognized Leonard Peltier as a Human Rights Defender. Other supporters include Coretta Scott King, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Reverend Jesse Jackson, the American Friends Service Committee, Nobel Laureate Rigoberta Menchu, the National Council of Churches, and many others.

This is the second consecutive year of music, meetings and demonstrations in the Pioneer Valley in support of Leonard Peltier. Last year's event at the Iron Horse was successful and this year should be even better. Posters with the artwork of Lahri Bond of Heartwork Graphics show the engraved drawing of the spirit of Crazy Horse with Peltier seeing the bars of his prison dissolve in a vision of a star-bright night.
