In August, 1969, at a place called Eden Park in Cold Springs, NY, a friend asked me if I wanted to go with him to a concert in Bethel. This was the beginning of a big adventure, having just graduated from high school. When Richie Havens sang FREEDOM, I realized I would seek brothers and sisters and an alternative pathway for peace and harmony. One year later, after four dead in Ohio, and other students fatally shot at Jackson State, with the continuing undeclared (imperialistic) war in Southeast Asia, I could not stay in school nor join the military. I began to consider resisting the Draft, and journeyed across Canada trying to find my way, inwardly hearing verses from Joni Mitchell’s song, Woodstock: Well maybe it is just the time of year or maybe its the time of man; I don’t know who l am, but you know life is for learning. Forty years later I returned to Bethel Woods for The Heroes of Woodstock concert. Those attending were told that we can download the music for free with the code “815” for a few days. Item two is on September 11. Whereas Democracy Now! reported President Obama defending his escalation of the war in Afghanistan, DN did not respond to the false reason for why he said we were there. Recorded last Monday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Convention in Phoenix. President Obama said, “As I said when I announced this strategy, there will be more difficult days ahead. The insurgency in Afghanistan didn’t just happen overnight, and we won’t defeat it overnight. This will not be quick or easy. But we must never forget, this is not a war of choice, this is a war of necessity. Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. The solid evidence presented in these suits is compelling, especially the scientifically-proven toxic impact of known flu vaccine ingredients (including mercury, aluminum, squalene, auto-immunogenic foreign proteins, and carcinogenic genetic materials).
When you think about this sudden onslaught of litigation, you have to wonder why there has not been more collaboration in this direction years ago.
The main answer lies with one piece of legislation, advanced by mostly one woman, Barbara Loe Fisher, chief of "Controlled Opposition" for BigPharma, undermining litigations for vaccine injury compensation through the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) sponsored National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986.
Nearly everyone believes this Congressional Act was "a good thing." In fact, this action was a covert operation that tied the hands of families and compensation attorneys making it nearly impossible to effectively sue drug companies. BigPharma became indemnified against such litigation because of the Act. In essence, this act gave free license to kill and maim people via vaccines to drug industrialists under the guise of "grassroots" legislation.
It is bizarre that few people realize we are dealing with state sponsored, consumer supported, GENOCIDE. This "politically incorrect" "G-word," is defined as the "mass killing, or enslaving, of people for profit, politics, and/or ideology." So far, vaccine injury activists have feared using this word because those who do are labelled as "radicals" and censored.
I am a classic example of this betrayal. For the past fifteen years I have been censored and slandered by so-called "anti-vaccination" leaders allied with NVIC president, Barbara Loe Fisher, who considers me "radical," because I dared herald this truth. Now a few leaders in the anti-vaccination movement have finally begun to use this "G-word" to describe what is actually happening.
Even more liberating, . . . litigation against GENOCIDE demands use of the single federal law that condemns this criminal manipulation of our population as you'll read below. . . .
ADVANCING LAWSUITS
Recently, physician attorney Mayer Eisenstein, a student of the Dr. Robert Mendelson, the first doctor to use this term, "iatrogenocide" to describe medical mass murder, told me "Len, in the last few months you have been vindicated. No one can call you 'radical,' anymore!" Then, he celebrated with me zero cases of autism in his 20,000 family pediatric practice because he condemns vaccination as "medical malpractice."
A few years ago a study of Amish families showed autism rates much like Dr. Eisenstein demonstrates in his practice. Anyone with any common sense would compare these two scientific cohorts against vaccinated populations of children to evidence GENOCIDE that federal officials conservatively estimate strikes 1-in-150 families. (More recent reports put the rate of vaccine-induced mercury-related autistic spectrum disorder at around 1-in-65 families.)
With the flu vaccines advancing a related genocidal depopulation agenda, the most correct American statute to apply here is US Code Title 18, Crimes and Criminal Procedure, Chapter 50A, Section 1091. Genocide. This direction comes to us from veteran US Constitutional attorney, Larry Becraft. Attorney Becraft's justified concern is that we put our best foot forward and not have pro se plaintiffs who know too little about law and set legal precedents that are unjustified by the evidence of genocide before us.
A correctly crafted lawsuit "can be important, if put together correctly. . . . No federal law exists that even remotely pretends to claim authority to administer some compulsory vaccination program in the States. . . . The legal authority to do all this exists in the States. While they may take cues from Uncle Sam and the WHO, the States are the ultimate authority regarding this issue," attorney Becraft counsels. "Lawsuits seeking temporary restraining orders (TROs) and preliminary injunctions need to be supported by valid, sworn evidence, and not rumors, hearsay, and information pulled from the Net, all of which is inadmissible."

(NaturalNews) A warning letter about the swine flu vaccine was leaked to the DailyMail over the weekend. Written by Professor Elizabeth Miller, head of the Health Protection Agency's Immunization Department, it warns neurologists that the influenza vaccine of 1976 was linked to a devastating neurological condition called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). "The vaccines used to combat an expected swine influenza pandemic in 1976 were shown to be associated with GBS and were withdrawn from use," says the July 29 letter.
GBS can cause paralysis and death. One woman mentioned in the DailyMail story -- Hilary Wilkinson -- was stricken with GBS and had to be fed through a drip while needing a tracheotomy just to breathe. It took her three months in the hospital to learn how to walk and talk again. On the topic of the swine flu vaccine, she says today, "It makes me feel wary that the Government is rolling out this vaccine without any clear idea of the GBS risk, if any. I wouldn't wish it on anyone... I'm frightened to have the swine flu vaccine if this might happen again -- it's a frightening illness and I think more research needs to be done on the effect of the vaccine."
An 800 percent increase in GBS risk
A second letter has also surfaced with a warning about the swine flu vaccine. It's from the Association of British Neurologists and is authored by Dr. Rustam Al-Shahi Salman and Professor Patrick Chinnery. It says "Following the 1976 program of vaccination against swine influenza in the US, a retrospective study found a possible eight-fold increase in the incidence of GBS."

The nationwide revolt against government plans to implement a mass swine flu vaccination program in the United Kingdom has picked up steam, with a poll revealing that a third of NHS nurses will refuse to take the shot.
Despite nurses and frontline health workers being the primary target group to take the vaccine, just 37 per cent of them said they would take the swine flu vaccine in a survey conducted by Nursing Times magazine. 30 per cent said they would not be immunized and 33 per cent said they were unsure.
Of the 30 per cent who said they would refuse to be vaccinated, 60 per cent said the reason was due to fears about the safety of the vaccine, following revelations that the shots will contain mercury and squalene and have also been linked with the killer nerve disease Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Another 31 per cent said they would refuse the vaccine because they did not consider the risk from swine flu to be great enough.
The government responded to the poll by claiming that nurses have a duty not to infect their patients and urged them to take the vaccine, but it seems that many fear the health consequences of taking the vaccine will be worse than catching the virus itself.
Interestingly, a London Times article on the story reveals that fewer than one in seven nurses in the UK receives the annual flu shot, highlighting the fact that health workers, who would be in a position to be well educated on the issue, are already fully aware of the dangers associated with vaccines in general.
The swine flu vaccine is being rushed through safety procedures while the government has provided pharmaceutical companies with blanket immunity from lawsuits arriving out of the vaccine causing deaths and injuries.
It was previously revealed that some batches of the vaccine will contain mercury, a toxin linked with autism and neurological disorders. The vaccine will also contain the dangerous ingredient squalene, which has been directly linked with cases of Gulf War Syndrome and a host of other debilitating diseases.
It was also recently reported that the UK government sent a confidential letter to senior neurologists telling them to be on the alert for cases of a brain disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which could be triggered by the vaccine.
Following the leak of the letter a senior neurologist told the Daily Mail, “I would not have the swine flu jab because of the GBS risk.”
The last attempt to mass vaccinate the public against swine flu, during the 1976 outbreak in the United States, killed more people than the virus itself.
The vast majority of respondents to the London Times article about the nurses’ refusal to take the shot commented that they too would refuse to take the vaccine, mirroring sentiment across the country.
At this stage only a deadlier return of the virus backed by a massive government fearmongering campaign is going to make anything like a majority of the population take the swine flu shot.
Since the majority of the population will refuse to take the vaccine, the government’s only option will be to institute a mandatory program backed by force, or to drop plans for mass vaccination altogether.

SWINE FLU victims could be buried in mass graves during a second wave of the virus, which is expected to hit London this autumn.
A Home Office document shows a plan for “a grave that is for a number of unrelated persons, excavated mechanically in advance and designed for efficient preparation and use” creating “a burial site for multiple graves and consecutive burials”
A spokesman today said the plans were “possibilities, not certainties”, but said swine flu victims nationwide could be interred in mass graves if necessary.
Planners say the multiple person burial plots are a “worst case scenario” tactic if the Government is forced to activate emergency plans to take over from local authorities struggling to deal with large numbers of interments.

In this case, the award was given for his advocacy of truth and justice in regard to the call for a new and independent investigation into the 9/11 attacks, and for his representation of the Latino community on Rescue Me as fire-fighter Franco Rivera.
In the 5th season of Rescue Me (2009) a “9/11 Truth” subplot is focused through the character of Franco Rivera (played by Sunjata) who stirs up controversy in the firehouse when he announces to a journalist that he firmly believes 9/11 was an inside job.
Sunjata grew up in Chicago, the adopted son of a police dispatcher and a civil rights worker. He graduated from Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, where he played center for two state championship football teams. He completed his undergraduate studies at Florida A&M University and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He then received his master’s degree in fine arts from the Tisch School of the Arts of New York University.

FDNY widow pushes Congress to pass 9/11 health bill

The widow of a New York firefighter, who recently died of cancer he believed was caused from exposures to toxins at Ground Zero, urged Congress Wednesday to bring a 9/11 health bill to a vote.
“The federal government should be taking care of these people," said Jennifer McNamara, whose husband, John, died Sunday. "Even on his deathbed, he made us promise that we would make sure that other people were taken care of.”
John McNamara, 44, of Blue Point, was a 10-year veteran and long fought for health benefits for fellow rescue workers.
McNamara worked about 500 hours at Ground Zero after the 2001 attacks. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2006. He believed his exposure to toxins at Ground Zero caused his illness.
His wife joined Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) and John Feal, founder of the FealGood Foundation, at Bishop's Coram office Wednesday. "Jennifer, quite selflessly, wants to use the tragic and untimely death as an opportunity to raise consciousness, raise awareness for this bill," Bishop said.
McNamara spent the last few years of his life joining Feal, a first-responder advocate, to promote the James Zadroga Health and Compensation Act legislation proposed in Congress.
The bill, which would provide testing and medical treatment to thousands sickened with 9/11-related illnesses, was named for a New York police officer who died of lung and brain damage after working at the World Trade Center site. Bill advocates want the federal government to cover 9/11-related health costs to avoid having those sickened to be burdened by health care bills. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan) introduced the bill in February. Since then, it has been working its way through legislative committees and has yet to make it to the House for a vote.
“My husband would think that it’s shameful, absolutely shameful” that legislators are dragging their feet, McNamara said. She then turned to the final moments she shared with her husband at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center.
She said he was a fighter to the end. “I told him that he needed to go and [if] he was tired of fighting, he could stop,” she said. "He kept shaking his head 'no.' He was never gonna stop."
A short while later, Jennifer McNamara watched the heart monitor display a flat line.
In addition to his wife, McNamara is survived by his son, Jack, 2. His funeral is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan.

The Bush Administration holdovers on the U.S. Parole Commission today adopted the position of the FBI that anyone who may be implicated in the killings of its agents should never be paroled and should be left to die in prison. Despite judicial determinations that the unrepentant FBI fabricated evidence and presented perjured testimony in Leonard Peltier's prosecution; despite a jury's acquittal on grounds of self-defense of two co-defendants who were found to have engaged in the same conduct of which Mr. Peltier was convicted; despite Mr. Peltier's exemplary record during his incarceration for more than 33 years and his clearly demonstrated eligibility for parole; despite letters and petitions calling for his release submitted by millions of people in this country and around the world including one of the judges who ruled on his earlier appeals; and despite his advanced age and deteriorating health, the Parole Commission today informed Mr. Peltier that his "r elease on parole would depreciate the seriousness of your offenses and would promote disrespect for the law," and set a reconsideration hearing in July 2024. This is the extreme action of the same law enforcement community that brought us the indefinite imprisonment of suspected teenage terrorists, tortures, and killings in CIA prisons around the world and promoted widespread disrespect for the democratic concepts of justice upon which this country supposedly was founded. These are the same institutions that have never treated indiginous peoples with dignity or respect or accepted any responsibility for centuries of intolerence and abuse. At his parole hearing on July 28th Leonard Peltier expressed regret and accepted responsibility for his role in the incident in which the two FBI agents and one Native American activist died as the result of a shootout on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Mr. Peltier emphasized that the shootout occurred in circumstances where there literally was a war going on between corrupt tribal leaders, supported by the government, on the one hand, and Native American traditionalists and young activists on the other. He again denied -- as he as always denied -- that he intended the deaths of anyone or that he fired the fatal shots that killed the two agents, and he reminded the hearing officer that one of his former co-defendants recently admitted to having fired the fatal shots, himself. Accordingly, it is not true that Leonard Peltier participated in "the execution style murders of two FBI agents," as the Parole Commission asserts, and there never has been credible evidence of Mr. Peltier's responsibility for the fatal shots as the FBI continues to allege. Moreover, given the corrupt practices of the FBI, itself, it is entirely untrue that Leonard Peltier's parole at this juncture will in any way "depreciate the seriousness" of his conduct and/or "promote disrespect for the law." We will continue to seek parole and clemency for Mr. Peltier and to eventually bring this prolonged injustice to a prompt and fair resolution.

The Supreme Court has taken the rare step of ordering a new hearing for Georgia death row prisoner Troy Anthony Davis. The nation’s highest court ordered a federal district court in Georgia to “receive testimony and make findings of fact as to whether evidence that could not have been obtained at the time of trial clearly establishes his innocence.” Davis was convicted for the 1989 killing of a white police officer. Since then, seven of the nine non-police witnesses have recanted their testimony, and there is no physical evidence tying him to the crime scene. August 07, 2009 "Information Clearing House" -- I recently visited Central America. Everyone I talked with there was convinced that the military coup that had overthrown the democratically-elected president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, had been engineered by two US companies, with CIA support. And that the US and its new president were not standing up for democracy.
Earlier in the year Chiquita Brands International Inc. (formerly United Fruit) and Dole Food Co had severely criticized Zelaya for advocating an increase of 60% in Honduras’s minimum wage, claiming that the policy would cut into corporate profits. They were joined by a coalition of textile manufacturers and exporters, companies that rely on cheap labor to work in their sweatshops.
Memories are short in the US, but not in Central America. I kept hearing people who claimed that it was a matter of record that Chiquita (United Fruit) and the CIA had toppled Guatemala’s democratically-elected president Jacobo Arbenz in 1954 and that International Telephone & Telegraph (ITT), Henry Kissinger, and the CIA had brought down Chile’s Salvador Allende in 1973. These people were certain that Haiti’s president Jean-Bertrand Aristide had been ousted by the CIA in 2004 because he proposed a minimum wage increase, like Zelaya’s.
I was told by a Panamanian bank vice president, “Every multinational knows that if Honduras raises its hourly rate, the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean will have to follow. Haiti and Honduras have always set the bottom line for minimum wages. The big companies are determined to stop what they call a ‘leftist revolt’ in this hemisphere. In throwing out Zelaya they are sending frightening messages to all the other presidents who are trying to raise the living standards of their people.”
It did not take much imagination to envision the turmoil sweeping through every Latin American capital. There had been a collective sign of relief at Barack Obama’s election in the U.S., a sense of hope that the empire in the North would finally exhibit compassion toward its southern neighbors, that the unfair trade agreements, privatizations, draconian IMF Structural Adjustment Programs, and threats of military intervention would slow down and perhaps even fade away. Now, that optimism was turning sour.
The cozy relationship between Honduras’s military coup leaders and the corporatocracy were confirmed a couple of days after my arrival in Panama. England’s The Guardian ran an article announcing that “two of the Honduran coup government's top advisers have close ties to the US secretary of state. One is Lanny Davis, an influential lobbyist who was a personal lawyer for President Bill Clinton and also campaigned for Hillary. . . The other hired gun for the coup government that has deep Clinton ties is (lobbyist) Bennett Ratcliff.” (1)
DemocracyNow! broke the news that Chiquita was represented by a powerful Washington law firm, Covington & Burling LLP, and its consultant, McLarty Associates (2). President Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder had been a Covington partner and a defender of Chiquita when the company was accused of hiring “assassination squads” in Colombia (Chiquita was found guilty, admitting that it had paid organizations listed by the US government as terrorist groups “for protection” and agreeing in 2004 to a $25 million fine). (3) George W. Bush’s UN Ambassador, John Bolton, a former Covington lawyer, had fiercely opposed Latin American leaders who fought for their peoples’ rights to larger shares of the profits derived from their resources; after leaving the government in 2006, Bolton became involved with the
Project for the New American Century, the Council for National Policy, and a number of other programs that promote corporate hegemony in Honduras and elsewhere.
McLarty Vice Chairman John Negroponte was U.S. Ambassador to Honduras from 1981-1985, former Deputy Secretary of State, Director of National Intelligence, and U.S. Representative to the United Nations; he played a major role in the U.S.-backed Contra’s secret war against Nicaragua’s Sandinista government and has consistently opposed the policies of the democratically-elected pro-reform Latin American presidents. (4) These three men symbolize the insidious power of the corporatocracy, its bipartisan composition, and the fact that the Obama Administration has been sucked in.
The Los Angeles Times went to the heart of this matter when it concluded:
What happened in Honduras is a classic Latin American coup in another sense: Gen. Romeo Vasquez, who led it, is an alumnus of the United States' School of the Americas (renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation). The school is best known for producing Latin American officers who have committed major human rights abuses, including military coups. (5)
All of this leads us once again to the inevitable conclusion: you and I must change the system. The president – whether Democrat or Republican – needs us to speak out.
Chiquita, Dole and all your representatives need to hear from you. Zelaya must be reinstated.

Last Friday a Bloomberg.com headline read: “U.S. Stocks Gain, Treasuries Drop as Unemployment Rate Declines”.
Let’s have a look at the reported decline in the rate of unemployment. Do you believe that the US auto industry added 28,000 jobs in July amidst GM bankruptcy, sell-off and close-down of GM auto divisions, and demise of GM suppliers? No? Well, that’s what the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.
The 28,000 new jobs were created by “seasonal adjustments.” July is a month when jobs are automatically added by the BLS to seasonally smooth the layoffs of auto workers during July’s retooling for the new model year. This year most of the retooling did not occur, yet the annual seasonal adjustments did. Adjustments are also made for supporting industries, which are partially idled while auto production halts for retooling.
More phantom jobs were created by the “Birth-Death Model.” The payroll jobs data contains guesses about the numbers of new startup company hires and jobs lost from business failures. Failed businesses don’t report the lost jobs (deaths), and new jobs from startups (births) are not captured in the reporting. The government estimates these numbers, but the estimates are based mainly on growth periods, not on recessionary times. Consequently, during economic downturns, the estimates from the Birth-Death Model overestimate the number of new startup jobs and underestimate the job loss.
The employment outlook was further improved by pushing another cadre of workers, who have been unemployed for too long, off the unemployment rolls. Remember that the long-term discouraged (people out of work for more than one year) are not counted as being in the work force. The length of the current downturn means that short-term discouraged workers, who are counted among the unemployed, are now moving into the long-term discouraged category, which simply erases their existence and lowers the measured rate of unemployment.
All sorts of distortions can find their way into the official statistics. For example, industrial production estimates are based on electricity consumption. Unusually hot weather, which causes a jump in air conditioning use, appears in the statistics as an increase in industrial output. Cool weather spells during summer reduces electricity use and results in a phantom drop in industrial output.
Nominal retail sales figures can increase from an uptick in inflation.
An increase in real GDP can be the result of underestimating inflation.
Other distortions come from the year to year comparisons. As time passes, new comparisons are no longer with previous peaks, but with more recent lows. Thus, reported declines are less severe than previously, which makes things sound better when they aren’t.
By spinning the financial news, the appearance of recovery is created, and this lures people back into the stock and real estate markets where they can lose the remainder of their wealth.

That a further stupendous collapse of ‘toxic’ derivatives is imminent, with severe implications for a number of large banks, has likewise been confirmed by our sources, in the context of a realisation that the Treasury is about to discover that nobody at home or abroad, is going to remain prepared to purchase its ‘Trashets’ as the banking sector sags under the dead weight of derivatives fraud. We did anticipate such a developments several months ago, and we indicated that this would occur in the third quarter of 2009 – a prediction that is being proved correct.
Specifically, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) shut down Colonial Bank, based in Alabama and Florida, which had $25 billion in ‘assets’, on 14th August, switching that bank’s 346 branches to the North Carolina bank BB&T. The failed bank, which acknowledged in July that there was 'substantial doubt' that it could survive as an independent business, admitted a few days prior to its enforced closure that it was under investigation for mortgage fraud, and also that a separate investigation was ongoing into its accounting practices in connection with an application for funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).
Colonial Bank’s offices, and those of Taylor, Bean & Whitaker, another US mortgage lender, were raided by Federal agents two weeks earlier. Four other banks also failed on 14th August, including Community Bank of Nevada, Las Vegas, two smaller institutions in Arizona, and one in Pittsburgh. On 16th August, it was reported to us that five large US banks were expected to fail at any moment, delivering another body blow to the Geithner Treasury’s crass and failing attempt to re-start the collapsed derivatives sector.
And against this background, the compromised Mrs Clinton, who has ‘rolled over’ on the Bushites and other criminal names, and is therefore temporarily ‘protected’ by her questionable ‘immunity’ for the time being, is now being intensively questioned by forces pressing home the Rule of Law, headed by the New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, to fill out gaps in their investigations into the criminal records of many of the high-level crooks we have exposed in these reports – Dr Alan Greenspan; the former US Treasury Secretary, Henry M. Paulson; the former Department of Homeland Security chief, Michael Chertoff; former Clinton-era Treasury Secretary and guardian of the Clintons’ ill-gotten funds at Citibank, Robert Rubin; the current US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner (because the Federal Reserve Bank of New York is under investigation); the New York Fed’s Stephen Friedman; and other US criminal operatives fingered in these reports and by other observers. I’ll bet you forgot all about it. How a half million kids came together on a 600-acre dairy farm in rural Bethel, New York. Woodstock, the concert lasted from August 15 to 17, 1969, southwest of the town of Woodstock, New York, in Ulster County. And somehow it managed to change our world as well as the history of rock and roll as listed by Rolling Stone.
What’s most impressive is that despite all the reports of rampant drug-taking, 20-mile traffic jams, not enough Porta Johns, and too much rain, the music brought a lack of violence and, more importantly, the kids took incredibly good care of themselves. Two deaths out of 500,000 people were reported, one by heroin overdose, the other of someone all covered up in a sleeping bag in a field, run over by a tractor that didn’t see him. But then, there were two births, amen.
Even though Bob Dylan (a local recluse resident at the time) skipped Woodstock to do a concert on the Isle of Wight, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Tim Hardin, Ravi Shankar, Richie Havens, Sly and the Family Stone, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, The Grateful Dead, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Crosby, Stills & Nash (&Young), Santana, Jeff Beck Group, The Band, Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Sha-Na-Na, John Sebastian, Country Joe and the Fish, 32 acts in all, showed up to rock the countryside if not the world.
The political performers included antiwar protestors, black militants, pro-gay and lesbian groups, pro-drug heads, anti-government groups and all of their redneck, out front, and infiltrator antitheses, in every conceivable form of array and disarray.
The whole wild and crazy event was captured in the Academy Award winning 1970 documentary Woodstock, commemorating the event.
Joni Mitchell’s song Woodstock became a major hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Also, Woodstock: Music from the Original Soundtrack and More, became a three-LP album, later a two disc CD. Woodstock 2 was released as a 2 LP album. A third album, Woodstock Diary was released in 1994. Atlantic gave us a four CD-box set titled Woodstock: Three Days of Peace and Music, which just about sums it all up. Peace and music.
Now mind you this came after we were a half-dozen years into Vietnam, after the apocryphal year of 1968, the Nobel Peace-Prize Winner Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy’s slayings, the Chicago Police riot at the Democratic Convention that handed its promised ballots not to the peace-maker Eugene McCarthy but to the Lyndon Johnson doughboy Hubert Humphrey.
1968 was also the year Danny the Red shut down France with a General Workers Strike. It came with the massacres at Hue and Mylai, Nam casualties passing 30,000, CIA Director William Colby’s Phoenix Program that killed between 20,000 and 60,000 dissidents. That was the year that the Beatles took off for more meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and came up with Hey Jude and Revolution. That was the year that civil rights mushroomed not just here but in Northern Ireland.
Also, it was the year Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara tiptoed out of office after he ordered the DOD to start a secret study of US decision making on Vietnam since the end of the Second World War. The study, completed in 1969, was known as the Pentagon Papers, 47, volumes, 3,000 pages of narrative history, 4,000 pages of corroborating documents. Of the 15 copies passed out, one went to the RAND Corporation, a major military contractor.
A high-ranking civilian employee named Daniel Ellsberg, who worked in Nam from 64 to 67, felt the war was wrong and the government had not been straight with the public about it. He copied the study and leaked most of it to Neil Sheehan, a New York Times reporter who’d also been to Nam. The first installment of the condemning document appeared on June 13, 1971, in The Times, including the misdeeds, deception, and tragedy of it all.
Twenty-four years later, in April 1995, McNamara, on the first page of his book, In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam, wrote, “It is estimated that something on the order of 3.8 million Vietnamese (North and South, military and civilian) were killed. The United States lost 58,000. Had the United States lost in proportion to its population the same percentage as Vietnam, 27 million Americans would have died.” Sound like Iraq? Afghanistan?
But the descendents of McNamara and his cohorts, who were so full of passionate intensity at the time, are still around, with new wars, new weapons and new payloads of death, destruction and blight. We find them today, after destroying Iraq now busy pouring into Afghanistan and Pakistan once again after their own and everyone else’s destruction.

Across the world, they yelled and held up banners to protest its flyby of Earth.
They said the craft, careening through space at 42,000 miles per hour, had a good chance of slapping into the Earth's atmosphere and spreading dangerous radiation throughout the planet.
In protests, on Web sites, in papers, and in speeches, they claimed that thousands, even millions, could die.
No one did.
On early Wednesday morning the Cassini probe, carrying 72 pounds of radioactive fuel, whizzed by Earth -- without incident -- on its way to Saturn.
But as long as there's been a Cassini, there have been vocal anti-Cassini activists. For two years, they've spoken out on the craft's plutonium dioxide power, made with the radioactive element used in nuclear weapons. (The plutonium used on Cassini, though, is not weapons-grade.)
Come launch time -- in October 1997 -- the protesters staked out the Cape Canaveral launch site to try to stop the probe.
The launch went off without a hitch.
And when the craft was on its way back to Earth after spiraling around Venus for a gravity boost, the opponents once again unfurled their banners.
Jonathan Mark was one of the protest leaders. His website, "Stop Cassini Earth Flyby," was a kind of Protest Central for opponents of the craft.
On it, there are impassioned pleas to stop the mission with headlines like "NASA Misleads the World," and "The Cassini Gamble."
There are links to scholarly papers on the risks of the mission to the planet and its inhabitants and to political dispatches decrying the military's role in space research.
You can sign up for legal action and send off thoughts to world leaders.
And you can view pictures of the worldwide protests: of grandmothers making their voices heard, and Bangladeshis taking a stand.
But now that Cassini passed by safely, was it all for naught?
"Protesting against Cassini wasn't a mistake," Mark said. "It's significant, and I'm glad there wasn't any accident."
Mark, who sends his anti-Cassini newsletter to over 1,000 subscribers, still believes that plutonium-powered spacecraft could one day play a role in destroying life on Earth.
"We're living at a time when human beings don't have to survive on this planet," he said. "We can go extinct like the dinosaurs."
On the other side of the world, the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Astronomical Society had a similar reaction.
"Our calculation was not wrong, because we did not say that it would definitely fall on the Earth during its closest approach with Earth," F.R. Sarker said. "We were more concerned about the radioactive materials Cassini has been carrying on board."
NASA, on the other hand, couldn't resist a little gloating.
"We told you so," chimed in Mary Beth Murrill, spokeswoman for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, when asked what she would say to the anti-Cassini protesters.
The space agency had said all along that a disaster was extremely unlikely, with a probability of less than one-in-a-million.
Another NASA spokesman, Douglas Isbell, said the protesters' concerns were legitimate, but that mission scientists had taken extra precautions to prevent an accident.
NASA is planning eight more missions that will rely on the same kind of plutonium power generators used on Cassini, Isbell said.
Radioisotope thermoelectric generators, or RTGs, power Cassini. They are primarily used on missions to the outer solar system, where the sun's rays are too weak to be a usable source of power.
RTGs rely on the heat produced as plutonium, a radioactive element, decays. A converter changes that heat into electricity, which powers the craft.
The next launch of an RTG-powered craft is scheduled for the end of 2003, the Europa Orbiter, which will study a moon of Jupiter.
Those future launches are keeping protesters from packing up their signs.
"Concern about future plutonium launches is my main concern," Mark said.
He plans to leave his website up as a reminder of the Cassini protests, though daily updates will probably stop.
And in Bangladesh, the Cassini probe's success has left a residue of worry.
"It is true, we are lucky as there was no accident with Cassini," said Sarker, whose group led an anti-Cassini protest march on June 18. "But we are unlucky because this would encourage NASA to launch more space probes in the future with plutonium dioxide until an accident really takes place."
