"We are going to be in such a fix when this war is over, or before this war is over.
Our grandchildren's grandchildren are going to be paying for this war.
I look at our future as, I'm sorry, being very, very dark."

Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.

-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Editor's Notes:

Stay the course in Iraq? This issue begins with one Democrat leader with another plan, one for peace. Item 2 is more on 9/11 investigations, about those who knew about the threat, with alarms triggered by the attack on the World Trade Center in 1993. And item 3 is on "The Exception to the Rulers" Democracy Now! book (and consciousness-raising) tour with Amy Goodman, host of the National Radio/TV Program Democracy Now, with her brother, Journalist/Author David Goodman. "The Exception to the Rulers" subtitle is: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media that Love Them.

Amy Goodman has taken investigative journalism to new heights.

There is a lot at stake at this moment. The President has said that he intends to stay the course in Iraq. That course is one which will increase the number of deaths and injuries, not only to our troops but to many innocent people in Iraq, ultimately making Americans less safe at home and less welcome around the world.

If we continue on this course, spending upwards of $200 billion in Iraq, America will continue to sacrifice a domestic agenda that is already failing to provide sufficient funding for education, health care, housing, job creation, veterans, and environmental protection. People ask me why I continue to run for president when the nomination's already been decided. Someone has to be offering alternatives to keep our troops in Iraq from an indefinite future. Someone has to say that the Democratic Party must offer a course of action which will enable America to connect with the world community, stop the waste of our precious tax resources, stabilize Iraq, and bring our troops home. Someone has to be the voice for universal, single-payer, not-for-profit health care so universally supported, and so desperately needed.

Someone has to say that NAFTA and the WTO must be replaced by trade structures which enshrine ethical principles of workers rights, human rights, and environmental protection. Someone has to say the PATRIOT Act must go.

The nomination's been decided. Now we must decide what we stand for as a party. If we offer real choices, real alternatives, show how people will really win something when they vote Democrat, we will win in November. I'm pledged to that outcome.

We cannot, and we must not, let our party sink into indecision and indifference on matters of war and peace, as we prepare for the November elections. That is why I will continue on this campaign, and that is why you are needed too. I can continue doing what I'm doing as long as I have your help.

Help keep alive the debate about Iraq. Help keep alive the hopes of people for a single-payer, national health care system. Help keep alive workers' rights, human rights, and environmental quality principles and trade agreements. Help keep alive the efforts to repeal the PATRIOT Act. Help keep alive the progressive movement inside the Democratic Party.

The next few weeks are crucial, as we wind up the primaries and caucuses, draft a Democratic Party platform, and prepare for the convention. There is a lot at stake in this moment. Please help us bring forth the best that is in all of us. Thank you so much.

- - For U.S. Troops the Deadliest Days of the War
The Associated Press
Wednesday 14 April 2004
[Excerpt]

WASHINGTON - For American forces in Iraq, these are the deadliest days of the war. At least 87 U.S. troops have been killed in action so far this month, with the most recent death announced on Tuesday. Also this month, more than 560 have been wounded and two soldiers were declared missing. At least four American civilians were killed, one contractor was captured by gunmen and six others were missing and feared abducted.

The number wounded so far in April exceeds the total for any other full month of the war by more than 220..

Of the total, 540 have died since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat was over. And 220 have died since Saddam Hussein was captured on Dec. 13, an event that many in the U.S. government had hoped would mark the beginning of the end of the anti-occupation insurgency.

Published on Thursday, April 15, 2004 by the Guardian/UK
Bush Rips Up the Road Map Sharon wins 'historic' backing for plan to evacuate Gaza -
but hold on to West Bank control

President George Bush swept aside decades of diplomatic tradition in the Middle East yesterday, saying it was "unrealistic" to expect a full Israeli withdrawal from lands occupied during the 1967 war or the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

In a significant policy shift, Mr Bush relaxed Washington's objections to Jewish settlements in the West Bank, and attempts by Israel to dictate the terms of a final settlement with the Palestinians.

He told a joint press conference with the Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon, that he was prepared to bless a plan to dismantle Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip, while retaining Israeli control over substantial sections of the West Bank.

- - Bush Contradicts Self At His Own Press Conference

Daily Mislead Archive, April 14, 2004

During last night's prime time press conference, President Bush once again claimed that "there was nobody in our government, at least, and I don't think the prior government that could envision flying airplanes into buildings"1. But just minutes later at the same press conference the president proved he was not telling the truth. Specifically, Bush said the reason he supposedly requested intelligence briefings before 9/11 "had to do with the Genoa G-8 conference I was going to attend" in 2001. Bush was referring to the fact that, prior to that conference, he was warned that "Islamic terrorists might attempt to kill him and other leaders by crashing an airliner into the summit" meetings2...

- - George and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamtie
by William Rivers Pitt:

[Excerpts]

The first thing you got was the tie.

You lost the importance of the press conference. You lost the fact that Bush had only done two of these prime time gigs in his entire term, and that he hates them because he isn't good at them. You lost the fact that the 9/11 Commission had been punching him and his administration around the room for the last couple of weeks. You lost the fact that September 11 had been demystified, that the going wisdom now says it could have been stopped by an administration that was actually paying attention. You lost the fact that almost 80 American soldiers and something like 900 Iraqis had been killed in the last month of fighting, that almost 700 American soldiers have been killed since the invasion was undertaken, and that, oh by the way, there are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

You lost all of that and were left with the tie around Bush's neck, the gray spotted tie that was flashing and heliographing in the camera's eye like something out of a Hunter S. Thompson fever dream, the mesmerizing swirl of reds and yellows and purples and blues that left the whole press conference behind in a hypnotizing, dazzling, inebriating swirl of flummoxed technology which almost certainly caused Americans from sea to shining sea to lean towards their televisions and exclaim, "Holy Christ, Marjorie, look at the man's necktie!"

The tie only worked for a minute. After that, the only thing hypnotizing on the television was this small fraction of a man playing at being Presidential while the world crashes down around his ears.

God help us all.

- - Decoding the PDB
By Larry C. Johnson, TomPaine.com, April 12, 2004

Are George W. Bush and Condoleezza Rice really as clueless as they are claiming to be? Bush and Rice are both on the record misstating what was in the 6 August 2001 PDB (Presidential Daily Briefing). They both insist the information was only "historical" and "not actionable." They apparently are not alone in their faux ignorance.

Republican partisans and even some members of the media are busy bolstering the spin that this was "an historical memo." Absolute nonsense! I wrote about 40 PDB's during my four-year tenure at the CIA. This particular PDB article was written in response to a presidential request. I am told that Bush's request was a reaction to the intelligence warnings he was hearing during the daily CIA morning briefings. Something caught his attention and awakened his curiosity. He reportedly asked the CIA to come back with its assessment of Bin Laden's intentions. The CIA answered the question - Bin Laden was targeting the United States...

He served with the CIA from 1985 through 1989 and worked in the State Department's office of Counter Terrorism from 1989 through 1993. He also is a registered Republican who contributed financially to the Bush Campaign in 2000.

- - More 9/11 Questions - Yossef Bodansky's "Target America"

BRASSCHECK - Into what deep, dark media hole has Yossef Bodansky fallen? Bodansky was (is?) director of the House Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare. Not a flake. Not an outsider.

In 1993, a book of his published in mass market paperback form "Target America: Terrorism Today" detailed the intentions of 'Islamists' to someday use hijacked planes as missiles. According to the book there were actual training programs in place to prepare people to accomplish this very exacting mission.

The disappearance of this book from the 9-11 discussion has been total. It started immediately after the attacks and continues up to today. As if that were not strange enough, Bodansky also wrote another book which, while it was briefly a New York Times bestseller, has also mysteriously gone missing in action.

Title: "Bin Laden: The Man Who Declared War on America" Interesting title especially since the 'asleep at the wheel' crowd claims they [UTF-8?] didn't know we were at war with the guy. . . "The Man Who Declared War on America" was in the works long before the September 11 attacks. After a brief - and studiously superficial - flurry of press appearances, Bodansky, the book and his detailed research into matters you'd think the news media would be clamoring for became a grand non-issue..

The great 9-11 media mystery for me is why is this establishment guy who made very detailed predictions both about the practicalities of a plan attack and the intentions of 'Bin Laden' completely off the media radar?

My other favorite unanswered questions:

- Who warned Mayor Willie Brown not to fly the week of September 11th? Right after the attack, he said someone had, but now he won't name the name - and no one is pressing him too hard.

- Who authorized and coordinated the special flights of over 120 mostly unnamed Saudis from the US immediately after September 11th when US air space was closed to all commercial air traffic?

- Oh, and what happened to that multi-multi-billion dollar air defense system we all pay for. You know the one that normally challenges any jet or large plane that strays from its flight path and does not respond to inquiries. It's not like they don't know what to do when this happens, but on 9-11, they did nothing.

3) Amy Goodman - The Exception to the Rulers

The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians,
War Profiteers, and the Media that Love Them

The above is to the title of the first book by Amy Goodman, Host of the National Radio/TV Program Democracy Now, with her brother, Journalist/Author David Goodman

Amy Goodman's The Exception to the Rulers, written with her brother David Goodman, chronicles the tireless efforts of an unembedded journalist and her colleagues to get to the truth and expose the lies, corruption and crimes of the power elite-an elite that is bolstered by large media conglomerates.

For years, award-winning journalist Amy Goodman has confronted the Washington establishment and its corporate cronies. She hosts the national radio and TV show Democracy Now! , now the largest public media collaboration in North America and a phenomenal grassroots movement. Her goal is "to go to where the silence is, to give voice the silenced majority."

Now, in her first book, Amy Goodman offers her no-holds-barred perspective on world events and the hidden motives behind those in power. On subjects ranging from the deceptions of the George W. Bush administration, war profiteering in Iraq, to the corruption of media monopolies and corporate influence over the government, Amy Goodman attacks and exposes the lies and hypocrisy that put democracy at risk.

"What journalism should be: beholden to the interests of people, not power and profit."

—Arundhati Roy, author of The God of Small Things

"At times when people are told to 'watch what they say,' Amy Goodman is not afraid
to speak truth to power. She does it every day."

—Susan Sarandon, actress

"She gets up every morning of every day — long before the rest of us! — to be the only daily voice of truth on the radio in the United States of America. How sad that I even have to write those words! A nation of 300 million, a written guarantee of a free press, and no one will do the job that Amy Goodman does so simply, so profoundly. This book puts the pedal to the metal of all the lies we're told, day in and day out. Amy Goodman is a national treasure, and if you are unable to pick up her signal on the dial, you can now pick up this book, shake your head in disbelief and disgust as you read it, and then put it down so you can go raise some hell!"

—Michael Moore,
director, Bowling for Columbine,
and author, Stupid White Men and Dude, Where's My Country?
