Peace Day * Kucinich Events * Mumia's Health

18 September 2003

"As a candidate for President, I offer a different vision for America, one which separates me from the other candidates. I am the only candidate who will take this country away from fear and war and tax giveaways, and use America's peace dividend for guaranteed health care for all, ending health care for profit. I am the only candidate who will stop the privatization of social security and bring the retirement age back to 65. As President, I will cancel NAFTA and the WTO, restore our manufacturing jobs, save our family farms, create full employment programs. I will repeal the Patriot Act to regain for all Americans the sacred right of privacy in our homes, our libraries, our schools."

– Dennis J Kucinich
(Presidential Debate, ABC News, 5/3/03)

Editor's Notes:

On September 4th Flyby News posted the speech by Dennis Kucinich for receiving the Gandhi Peace Award, which was presented by the world-renown organization, Promoting Enduring Peace (PEP). "Every year this award is given to an individual recognized as a "distinguished peacemaker" and "for contributions made in the promotion of international peace and good will." Past recipients include Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, Dr. Linus Pauling, Dr. Helen Caldicott, Cesar Chavez, Sen. George McGovern, and former Attorney Gen. Ramsey Clark. According to PEP, "Dennis Kucinich has been given this award because of his dedication to peace and improving social conditions for the workers and poor, which we feel is a prerequisite for peace. For his honesty and the good person he is, and for the good spirit which he is trying to instill."

With our country torn by war, Candidate Kucinich stands as a steady beacon of hope for change. Kucinich is the only candidate who has unwaveringly opposed the war with Iraq from the beginning. . . . The Gandhi Peace Award was conceived in the late 1940's by Dr. Jerome Davis, founder of the organization Promoting Enduring Peace (PEP). The yearly award was established in 1959 to honor persons outstanding in the work for world peace. Mr. Kucinich accepted the award at Amarantes SeaCliffs in New Haven, CT. on March 22."

The above information is posted at kucinich.us website, but I wanted to make note of the background on the September 4th issue of Flyby News. In this issue, Item 1 begins with information from the campaign to elect Dennis Kucinich for US President. The campaign is endorsing many events in honor of an International Day for Peace. Dick Cheney was asked: "In a recent poll many Americans believe Saddam was responsible for 9-11, does this surprise you?" Cheney's response: "No, I think it's not surprising that people make that connection." And for good reason. They have people running scared and they don't know what to believe. The time is now for an honest politician like Dennis Kucinich to take center stage. Please check item 1 for events on Peace Day and other events for the campaign to uphold Peace & Freedom as a sacred right. Life and beauty of Earth, our ancestors and generation yet to be born, deserve our greatest efforts for peace to flourish and prosper.

Meanwhile, new ways of confusing the qualities of a real peace candidate continue. Item 2 links to an open letter by Michael Moore asking General Wesley Clark to run for US President, and swift rebuttals of those looking at the record, and realities of what a commander for peace is -- or is not -- all about..

Item 3 is a report on the serious health condition of Mumia Abu Jamal. I learned of this from a letter of my friend still confined in the NY State prison system. Malik writes: "..I am in possession of all the Flyby News... Also, received all of your letters.. It was just great hearing from you. Your letters let me know that there are two of us fighting for my liberation... How can I ever thank you enough.

I want to pass word to all Flyby readers that it is being circulated that Mumia Abu Jamal is having health problems that may be extremely serious.. Mumia supporters must avalanche the prison holding him(sci Green; 175 Progress Drive, Waynesburg, PA 15370-8090) that he be given immediate attention by an outside doctor of his choice. Direct letters to Mumia can be sent through to the same prison address, beginning with Mumia's full name and his prison number: AM-8335!

This information was post on to me by a wonderful sista, Yuri..

There's nothing new to report concerning my case. The attorney just wrote me a letter telling me that everything will be ready for the end of October. We'll see! I am learning in my old age to be patient, have faith, and don't put any trust or faith in the Kourt system – that what is gonna be is gonna be! The history of those in theses positions have shown us that they aren't to be trusted. They make me sick just thinking over how so many of us have given them such power over us. When we do this we aren't in any position to complain, but we can do is to try and correct what has happened, so that it won't ever take place again!!! Item 3 is a posting on Mumia's situation found from an Internet search after receiving this loving letter from Malik.

"An injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
-- Martin Luther King, Jr.

If you want to write to Malik, or to learn about his case, please check the updated link from FlybyNews.com.

Item 4 is from a published letter to the editor of a local newspaper in response to the big question on many minds, especially if you heard him speak or know of his policies: "Can Kucinich Win?"

In a day of peace he has already won.

In the balance of day and night equilibrium shadows,
a torch fired by blight can be extinguished nought in sorrow
where time is consumed by a nobler stance, or one has chosen to fallen
beneath the cracks where corrupt dwellers stain a white house
indistinguishable, for a dream to live or die as a worthless token.

1) International Peace Day, Kucinich Events, & Platform

A recent poll showed that roughly 2/3 of Americans cannot name a single Democratic presidential candidate. So, with the media censorship for its own corporate interests, it is no wonder that many people have not heard of Dennis Kucinich. Yet a grassroots moving is underway to help make people aware of an opportunity to vote for the most qualified PEACE candidate and reclaim American democracy from the military-industrial-academic-media complex. The monster will keep growing unless we do something, following are some proposals.

The General Assembly, in resolution 55/282 (PDF),* of 7 September 2001, decided that, beginning in 2002, the International Day of Peace should be observed on 21 September each year. The Assembly declared that the Day be observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day. It invited all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, regional and non-governmental organizations and individuals to commemorate the Day in an appropriate manner, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in establishing a global ceasefire.

‘Twenty-four hours: to give relief workers a safe interlude for the provision of vital services; to offer mediators a building block towards a wider truce; to allow all those engaged in conflict to reconsider the wisdom of further violence."

-- Kofi Annan --
United Nations Secretary-General

Work and Celebrate for Peace and support
Dennis Kucinich for US President in 2004

* Support the one candidate for US President that voted against the misnamed "Patriot Act" and plans to introduce legislation in Congress to repeal the "Patriot Act!"

* Kucinich is the One that has declared without hesitation that he will vote against the Bush request for $87 billion in additional funds to continue the quagmire in Iraq.

* Dennis Kucinich also submitted a bill to Congress that would establish genuine universal health coverage -- nonprofit national health insurance for all.

* President Kucinich will withdraw the US from corporate trade deals like NAFTA and the WTO, and replace them with fair trade agreements that include labor and environmental protections.

* As an independent non-corporate president, Kucinich would cut the bloated military budget by 15% ($60 billion annually) where those funds can be invested in social and real peace solution programs.

* Congressman Kucinich is the one candidate that sued George Bush to stop him from going to war in Iraq without a Congressional Declaration of War. He also led opposition in Congress to the War in Iraq.

* Kucinich has a plan to repeal Bush's tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and invest that money in a plan for universal public education, age 3-college.

* Dennis J. Kucinich has pledged to break up corporate monopolies in agriculture, energy, media and other sectors that are strangling farmers, the environment and the public.

* Kucinich has pledged not only to sign the Kyoto Treaty on global warming, but to lead our country to 20% renewable energy by the year 2010.

* Who else but Dennis had risked his political career by standing up to banks and a private utility company to save public electric power.

* Dennis Kucinich is the only candidate that has sponsored legislation establishing a cabinet-level Department of Peace to participate in policy discussions alongside representatives of the Departments of State and Defense, and legislation to ban space-based weapons. He is the only one candidate that has received the Gandhi Peace Award (2003).

* Kucinich has a 98% lifetime pro-union voting record -- highest of all candidates as ranked by the AFL-CIO.

* Kucinich has a plan to offer "living wages," not just minimum wages, and would put Americans back to work with major investment programs to rebuild schools, roads, bridges, ports, sewage, water and environmental systems.

* Kucinich is the one candidate that stands firm against the privatization of Social Security and he is for returning the Social Security retirement age to 65.

* Congressman Dennis Kucinich has introduced legislation to repeal the Federal death penalty.

* Who else but Dennis has been endorsed by Willie Nelson, Ani DiFranco, Studs Terkel, Ed Asner, Hector Elizondo, Barbara Ehrenreich, Arun Gandhi, Ben Cohen (of Ben and Jerry's), Granny D (who walked across the country for campaign reform at age 89) and many others?

3) Alert on Mumia Abu Jamal's health

UNITED STATES: Alert on Abu Jamal's health

Supporters of imprisoned black revolutionary and journalist Mumia Abu Jamal are very concerned about his health. They report that he is suffering from swollen feet that could be the result of blood clots, a potentially serious condition. He wants to be able to take herbal medicines and be examined by a doctor from outside, since he has no confidence in the prison doctor.

Abu Jamal is still on death row in Pennsylvania after 21 years, even though a judge's ruling struck down his death sentence last year. His eloquent advocacy for the poor and oppressed has made him a target of the repressive state establishment.

The Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal is asking that people not only contact SCI Greene Prison at (724) 852-2902 about Abu Jamal's condition, but also urge elected officials supportive of him to put pressure on the prison and demand that his minimum requests be met.

These officials are

State Senator Vincent Hughes at < hughes@dem.pasen.gov >,

Representative Harold James at (215) 462-3308 or

4) Can Kucinich Win?

Congratulations to Keith Haworth of West Branch Wisconsin, who had this great letter published in his local paper!

Letter: Resident supports Kucinich and beliefs, not the horse race

By: Keith Haworth, West Branch
09/17/2003

I have a "Kucinich for President" bumper sticker on the back of my car. I don't generally use-or even like-bumper stickers. But sometimes, enough is enough and timidity is not what is needed.
I was filling my gas tank the other day and a fellow sufferer spotted my sticker. "I'd like to support Kucinich, but I don't think he can win, can he?" My answer was immediate, "Well, no, not as long as people think like that."

We talked a bit more and I explained that, to me, U.S. Representative Dennis Kucinich seems to be the only presidential candidate who actually forms his positions based on his beliefs and not political expediency, popularity polls or behind-the-scenes deals. I like that. I also like his core philosophy: that government is not the "enemy" but the servant of the people-a power for good, if we so choose. He reminds me very much of the Kennedy brothers!

But can he win?

Well, that is the wrong question. This is not a casino game, or a horse race, or a team sport, where our only task is to guess the winner and then place our bet. American politics is not sports gambling-it's far more real and far more important. As a citizen in a democracy, my task is to identify the candidate whose philosophy and agenda represent the best possible future for my country and then support him or her.

It is possible that Dennis Kucinich will not be elected as our next president, but I will be the real loser if I do not support the best possible future for America. We can greatly improve the quality of American politics-and heaven knows it needs it-if we stop handicapping and stand up for the best way we know.
