Web of War * CIA-Media * Columbia's Wake ~ Nukes

07 February 2003

1) The Tangled Web of War
2) Analysis Report: CIA Media Manipulation
3) In Columbia's Wake - Nukes-in-Space

"War is a tangled web of unbridled ego, power-mad agendas, and the loss of all sanity. Like all webs, once we are caught within, the struggle to escape is often more dangerous and lethal than the slim silvery threads that attracted us to it in the first place."

-- John Cory

Editor's Notes:

As Bush preaches the game is over and War on Iraq is inevitable, as countries are bribed to conform to the ruthless riches of the US, and unprecedented threat by weapons of mass destruction, fear is creating its own reality, hell. In item 1, following the excerpted piece by John Cory, is feedback on Powell's presentation to the UN. Nothing was proven about any significant harm caused by Iraq outside of its country in the last ten years. The world sees through the greed and world-dominating interests of the Bush administration, but the US media plays the role in keeping Americans afraid to look at the real enemy, an enemy of freedom and democracy. Item 2 is worth a thorough read, regarding the history of the CIA's takeover of the US media. Please help network this information, as well as Frank Dorrel's intense video compilation, "What I've Learned About US Foreign Policy: The War Against the Third World." [Info on getting this video is posted at flybynews.com - under "campaigns * actions & events."] Item 3 is more on the sad state of affairs. While the tragedy of the seven aboard Columbia is investigated, the US is moving swiftly to implement nuclear power in space. A small bit of debris could have caused the catastrophe, but imagine adding to the mix nuclear radiation. Karl Grossman authors this article called: "Nukes-in-Space in Columbia's Wake."

The following has feedback and reports related to the last issue of Flyby News:

On Ballot Tampering:

Recently, technicians and programmers for Diebold Election Systems, the company that supplied every single voting machine for the surprising 2002 results in the state of Georgia, the company that is preparing to convert the state of Maryland to its no-paper-trail computerized voting, admitted to a file-sharing system that amounts to a colossal security flaw.

- Really rich, far right-wing "Christian Nation" fanatics involved in the ownership of the companies that make the voting machines. That alone should set off alarm bells.

Seeing The Forest: 'What's wrong with this picture?'
February 04 - Topic: Elections

The article concludes:

"..This is an easy situation to fix. Demand that voting machines come with a paper printout that the voter looks at to verify that the vote was recorded correctly, and puts this paper record in a ballot box that is watched. That's all there is to it. Why in the world don't these machines come with this simple, common-sense security measure?

"..The right to vote -- and for that vote to be counted with integrity -- is at the heart of liberty. People are already skeptical. If we continue on this path, pure cynicism will corrode what's left of public trust in an already frayed system.

The following is a review by "Goodsister" on Congressman Kucinich's appearance on CNN's "Crossfire" 5 February 2003:

"I just saw the segment, and they had some nimrod CA Republican sitting with Kucinich. He repeated the phrase "blood grudge" at least five times by my count, as in "Iraq has a blood grudge against the United States" as a reason for war. His remarks were real eye-rollers; he had his little prepared set of phrases, and that was the extent of what he could contribute.

Rep. Kucinich was magnificent. He made his points clearly and firmly, no matter how many times little Tucker Carlson tried to derail him with frivolous and irrelevant sidebars. Tucker brought up the Congressman's votes from the past, on trying Hussein as a war criminal, and something else I forgot that's related.... Tucker was trying to say Kucinich is pro-Saddam, but instead he just neatly proved the opposite. Kucinich said, "Thanks for making clear that I've never been pro-Saddam", and looked at Tucker like he's an idiot.

Ha!

When the CA Repub actually said that the Iraqi people would love us as their liberators, throw flowers and wave American flags, Kucinich pointed out that they'd be unlikely to respond in that way to Operation Shock-Awe, which would drop 8000 missiles on Iraq. Kucinich says that inspections worked for years, and they can continue to work. He says there is no reason to punish the Iraqi people because we don't like their leader, not to mention 300,000 American men and women. He mentioned the numbers of other countries that possess chemical, biological, and/or nuclear weapons, and asked if we were prepared to bomb all of them and impose leaders more to our liking. And when someone tried to talk about the danger Iraq poses to US security, Kucinich held up a copy of the CIA report to the head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which says that what puts us in most danger would be for us to attack Iraq!

He got the last word in, too, commenting that "Being the world's policeman is not what America is about". And, very important to me, Kucinich never forgot that Iraqi lives are as important as American lives. That peculiar, parochial view some Americans have, thinking that somehow our lives are more "real" or somehow more valuable than those of foreign people living in countries we can't find on a map, is obviously not a view Kucinich shares. He clearly sees a big picture, a global picture. He sees that in order to survive as a species on what's left of our planet, we will need to evolve into cooperation and friendship.

I love this guy. Did anyone else see it? What did you think? Can we unseat the Pretender with this man's energy and integrity?"

1) The Tangled Web of War

The Tangled Web of War
By John Cory
TO correspondent in Saudi Arabia
t r u t h o u t | Perspective

Wednesday 05 February 2003

[The following is excerpted], for complete article, see:

..Here in the Middle East, the audience is already skeptical, to put it mildly. People from Jordan and Egypt and the UAE have assumed that fabrication is the technique in vogue from this administration because Bush wants his war. Bush in their eyes, has picked Iraq precisely because it is weakened from the previous war and a decade of sanctions. Everyone reminds me that most Arab military organizations are looked upon as "less than" their western counterparts. And because the US and others have spent decades profiting from the sale of weaponry in this part of the world, Bush and company are in the perfect position to know who would be the easiest target to decimate without heavy casualties. Thus making the US and Bush appear strong and invincible to anyone else who might object to American policies and their world-wide sagacity.

..The thing is, this White House has laid the groundwork for either war or no war, just to cover its butt. But it is counting on the leaks of attack plans and bombings to psych out Iraq, and should that fail, the heavy evidence offered by the "trustworthy" messenger Powell. The Bush junta hopes that Powell and his personal reputation can turn the American public, not the UN, into supporting the war against Iraq. Is this really how Colin Powell wants to be remembered?

Only through the use of war, can Bush and the GOP retain control of America. Feeding the public a daily dose of fear, a confused citizenry becomes easily cowed into silent obedience. Painting dissent as unpatriotic and treasonous, Bush uses war to erode civil liberties and slip partisan conservatives into the judicial system in order to ensure a long tenure and continued dismantling of anything closely resembling American principles of freedom and choice and accountability. Bush has bought and paid for his judicial branch, his congressional cronies, his corporate media lackeys, and is now moving on to reshape the rest of the world according to what is best for Bush and company.

The coming war has been spindled, twisted, and mutilated to conform to the needs of Bush, not the world, not America, but Bush. An attack on Iraq will do more harm than good. While American-Might could possibly win the battle, it cannot win the war.

Ignoring the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to threaten any chance for peace in the Middle East. The fallout from an American takeover in Iraq will only fuel the anti-western movements all over the Middle East and eventually all over the world. Bombings in Kenya, Bali, and elsewhere should serve as ominous warning of the smoldering resentment that will one day erupt as common occurrence everywhere. This is not about freedom-hating people. This is not about the poor railing out at the wealthy powers of world government. This is not about Islam versus Christianity.

This war is about the arrogant Corporate America that views the rest of the world as its own natural resource. Cheap labor, profitable water control, oil development and ownership, and control of financial markets are the driving factors of Bush's agenda. And he is willing to sacrifice whatever you have to accomplish it.

War is a tangled web of unbridled ego, power-mad agendas, and the loss of all sanity. Like all webs, once we are caught within, the struggle to escape is often more dangerous and lethal than the slim silvery threads that attracted us to it in the first place.

Powell's Threat to Peace

Colin Powell's presentation to the United Nations was an example of Alice in Wonderland-type propaganda. Reality has been turned upside down. At the very moment that Iraq, hobbled by 12 years of devastating sanctions and ongoing U.S. bombing, is surrounded by a heavily-armed invasion force of more than 100,000 troops, fighter aircraft, warships and high tech conventional missiles, and is threatened with a nuclear strike, Powell argued that Iraq poses a great threat to "peace."

The Pentagon has disclosed its plan to maintain peace by carrying out an opening blitzkrieg on Iraq of more than 3000 bombs and missiles in the first 48 hours. This plan is titled "Shock and Awe" by the administration. 300 to 400 Tomahawk cruise missiles will rip through Iraq on the first day of a U.S. assault, which is more than the number that were launched during the entire 40 days of the first Gulf War. On the second day, another 300 to 400 cruise missiles will be sent. "There will not be a safe place in Baghdad," said one Pentagon official. "The sheer size of this has never been seen before, never been contemplated before," the official said. One of the authors of the Shock and Awe plan stated the intent is, "So that you have this simultaneous effect, rather like the nuclear weapons at Hiroshima, not taking days or weeks but in minutes.'" From the Brainwashing of America

1. I will remain loyal to my sworn pledge to uphold the U.S. Constitution, no matter what. If I consider a civilian or military order or operation to be contradictory to the Constitution, I will not follow the order and will do whatever is in my power to stop the unconstitutional operation.

This mind-set is represented by such military leaders as (to name just a few):

Colonel L. Fletcher Prouty
General Frederick Woerner--commander in Panama and replaced by Bush senior when he wouldn't obey an illegal military order to attack Panama
Admiral William Crowe--Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and replaced by Bush senior when he wouldn't obey an illegal military order to attack Panama

2. I will do whatever my civilian and military commanders tell me to do, without reflection on whether or not what they are ordering is permitted by the Constitution (since I want to get ahead in the military). This mind-set is represented by such people as:

Colin Powell, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during Bush senior's presidency (took over when Admiral William Crowe wouldn't agree to Bush senior's illegal invasion of Panama)

Noam Chomsky on the anti-war movement

Noam Chomsky: The [peace] demonstrations were another indication of a quite remarkable phenomenon. There is around the world and in the United States opposition to the coming war that is at a level that is completely unprecedented in US or European history both in scope and the parts of the population it draws on.

There's never been a time that I can think of when there's been such massive opposition to a war before it was even started..

2) Analysis Report: CIA Media Manipulation

Operation Mockingbird: CIA Media Manipulation
By Mary Louise

"The CIA is the epitome of organized crime run amuck!"

-- Mary Louise

Note: The following was excerpted, for complete article, see:
http://www.prisonplanet.com/analysis_louise_01_03_03_mockingbird.html

The CIA's secret activities, covert missions, and connections of control are all done under the pretense and protection of national security with no accountability whatsoever, at least in their minds. Considering the public is held accountable for everything we think, say, and do there is something seriously wrong with this picture. The CIA is the President's secret army, who have been and continue to be conveniently above the law with unlimited power and authority, to conduct a reign of terror around the globe.

The "old boy network" of socializing, talking shop, and tapping each other for favors outside the halls of government made it inevitable that the CIA and Corporate America would become allies, thus the systematic infiltration and takeover of the media.

Under the guise of 'American' objectives and lack of congressional oversight, the CIA accomplish their exploits by using every trick in the book (and they know quite a few) that they actually teach in the notorious "School of the Americas", nicknamed the "School of Dictators" and "School of Assassins" by critics. The Association for Responsible Dissent estimates that 6 million people had died by 1987 as a result of CIA covert operations, called an "American Holocaust" by former State Department official William Blum. In 1948, the CIA recreated its covert action wing called the Office of Policy Coordination with Wall Street lawyer Frank Wisner as its first director. Another early elitist who served as Director of the CIA from 1953 to 1961 was Allen Dulles, a senior partner at the Wall Street firm of Sullivan and Cromwell, which represented the Rockefeller empire and other trusts, corporations, and cartels.

Starting in the early days of the Cold War (late 40's), the CIA began a secret project called Operation Mockingbird, with the intent of buying influence behind the scenes at major media outlets and putting reporters on the CIA payroll, which has proven to be a stunning ongoing success.

The CIA effort to recruit American news organizations and journalists to become spies and disseminators of propaganda, was headed up by Frank Wisner, Allen Dulles, Richard Helms, and Philip Graham (publisher of The Washington Post). Wisner had taken Graham under his wing to direct the program code-named Operation Mockingbird and both have presumably committed suicide.

Media assets will eventually include ABC, NBC, CBS, Time, Newsweek, Associated Press, United Press International (UPI), Reuters, Hearst Newspapers, Scripps-Howard, Copley News Service, etc. and 400 journalists, who have secretly carried out assignments according to documents on file at CIA headquarters, from intelligence-gathering to serving as go-betweens. The CIA had infiltrated the nation's businesses, media, and universities with tens of thousands of on-call operatives by the 1950's.

CIA Director Dulles had staffed the CIA almost exclusively with Ivy League graduates, especially from Yale with figures like George Herbert Walker Bush from the "Skull and Crossbones" Society.

Many Americans still insist or persist in believing that we have a free press, while getting most of their news from state-controlled television, under the misconception that reporters are meant to serve the public. Reporters are paid employees and serve the media owners, who usually cower when challenged by advertisers or major government figures. Robert Parry reported the first breaking stories about Iran-Contra for Associated Press that were largely ignored by the press and congress, then moving to Newsweek he witnessed a retraction of a true story for political reasons.

In 'Fooling America: A Talk by Robert Parry' he said, "The people who succeeded and did well were those who didn't stand up, who didn't write the big stories, who looked the other way when history was happening in front of them, and went along either consciously or just by cowardice with the deception of the American people.". . .

..A good site to visit for more information is Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, a public interest media watchdog group, at http://www.fair.org/index.html , http://www.fair.org/mediafiles/index.html and http://www.fair.org/extra/9711/gmg.html .

Media propaganda tactics include blackouts, misdirections, expert opinions to echo the Establishment line, smears, defining popular opinions, mass entertainment distractions, and Hobson's Choice (the media presents the so-called conservative and liberal positions).

"Who Controls the Media? The Subversion of the Free Press by the CIA, The Depraved Spies and Moguls of the CIA's Operation Mockingbird", "The CIA: America's Premier International Terrorist Organization", and "Virtual Government: CIA Mind Control Operations in America" by Alex Constantine are an excellent source of information on this topic:

http://www.alexconstantine.50megs.com/the_cia_and.html and
http://www.alexconstantine.50megs.com .

David Guyatt has written books and many articles including one entitled "Subverting the Media" at http://www.deepblacklies.co.uk/subverting_the_media.htm .

Then there are two articles called "A Timeline of CIA Atrocities" and "The Origins of the Overclass" by Steve Kangas that are very informative although from a more liberal perspective. Steve will not be writing anymore articles as he is no longer with us, having unfortunately met his untimely death that was 'apparently' from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. If you read about him on his web page that is still available, you will see that he did not seem like a person who was suffering from deep depression. In his memory, please take the time to read what he wrote at
http://www.korpios.org/resurgent/CIAtimeline.html , and
http://www.korpios.org/resurgent/index.html .

CNN aired "Valley of Death" in June of 1998 and Time magazine (both owned by Time-Warner) ran a story about a secret mission called Operation Tailwind and the activities of SOG, Studies and Observations Group, a secret elite commando unit of the Army's Special Forces that used lethal nerve gas (sarin), on a mission to Laos designed to kill American defectors. Suddenly the network was awash in denials and the story was hushed up, as usual. Acknowledged use of this gas coming at a time when the U.S. government was trying to get Saddam to comply with weapons inspections, was an embarrassment to say the least. What hypocrisy!

Having actually used the weapons on our own troops, then complaining and accusing Saddam of potential use of stored similar weapons, of which some were manufactured in and supplied by the U.S. The broadcast was prepared after exhaustive research and rooted in considerable supportive data. To decide for yourself what the truth is read Floyd Abrams' report on the CNN site at http://www.cnn.com/US/9807/02/tailwind.findings/index.html . . .

..One of the primary reasons John F. Kennedy was assassinated had to do with the fact he dared to interfere in the framework of power. Kennedy was intent on exercising his ELECTED powers and not allowing them to be usurped by power-crazed individuals in the intelligence community, threatening to "splinter the CIA in a thousand pieces and scatter it to the wind." There were four things that filled the CIA with rage and sealed his fate; JFK fired Allen Dulles, was in the process of founding a panel to investigate the CIA's numerous crimes, put a damper on the breadth and scope of the CIA, and limited their ability to act under National Security Memoranda 55.

There is such an overwhelming amount of information pertaining to the CIA that it is impossible to cover it all in one book, much less an article. Personally, I have come to the conclusion that the media is not only influenced by the CIA.....the media is the CIA. Many Americans think of their supposedly free press as a watchdog on government, mainly because the press itself shamelessly promotes that myth. One of the first tenets for the control of a population is to control all sources of information the population receives and mostly because of the pervasive CIA and Operation Mockingbird, the mainstream American Press is a controlled multi-national corporate/government megaphone. They are up to their eyeballs in dirty deeds and there will never be an end to the corruption that prevails unless the CIA is abolished. Otherwise, the CIA will just keep on using their tricks of propaganda, stuffed ballot boxes, purchased elections, extortion, blackmail, drug trafficking, sexual intrigue, kidnaping, beating, torture, intimidation, economic sabotage, false stories about opponents in the local media, infiltration and disruption of opposing political parties, demolition and evacuation procedures, death squads, and politically motivated assassinations. The CIA is the epitome of organized crime run amuck!

3) In Columbia's Wake - Nukes-in-Space

Nukes-in-Space in Columbia's Wake
By Karl Grossman

The Columbia shuttle disaster came just as NASA was pushing to greatly broaden its program to use nuclear power in space. This includes the development of a nuclear-propelled rocket--a project which NASA spent billions of dollars on in the 1950s and 60s until it was canceled because of concern of such a nuclear rocket crashing to earth.

Just think if it was a nuclear rocket that came falling down in pieces over Texas or elsewhere on Earth.

The new space nuclear power scheme, called Project Prometheus, is a broadening of the NASA Nuclear Systems Initiative--on which $1 billion is to be spent over five years--that began last year.

However, as the Los Angeles Times reported last month, NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe is expecting a "very significant" increase in that funding as the Nuclear Systems Initiative becomes Project Prometheus.

In addition to a nuclear-powered rocket, NASA is planning additional plutonium-energized space probe and to put atomic power to other space uses including the launching of planetary rovers with nuclear systems.

Indeed, this May and June NASA is planning to launch two rockets from Florida carrying rovers to be landed on Mars equipped with heaters powered by plutonium. The Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power In Space (www.speace4peace.org) has been conducting demonstrations to protest these launches.

NASA's "Environmental Impact Statement for the Mars Exploration Rover-2003 Project" says that "the overall chance of an accident occurring" for each launch "is about 1 in 30" and "the overall chance of any accident that releases radioactive materials to the environment is about 1 in 230." People "offsite in the downwind direction...could inhale small quantities of radionuclides," says NASA's statement. An area as far as 60 kilometers from the launch site could be impacted, says NASA.

"These and other NASA space shots involving materials must be canceled in the wake of the Columbia disaster and safe space energy systems be used instead," declares Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of the Global Network..

..In contrast, NASA's renewed emphasis on nuclear power in space "is not only dangerous but politically unwise," says Dr. Michio Kaku, professor of theoretical physics at the City University of New York and author of best-selling books including "Hyperspace." "The only thing that can kill the U.S. space program is a nuclear disaster. The American people will not tolerate a Chernobyl in the sky. That would doom the space program."

"NASA hasn't learned its lesson from its history involving space nuclear power," says Kaku, "and a hallmark of science is that you learn from previous mistakes. NASA doggedly pursues its fantasy of nuclear power in space. We have to save NASA from itself." He cites "alternatives" space nuclear power. "Some of these alternatives may delay the space program a bit. But the planets are not going to go away. What's the rush? I'd rather explore the universe slower than not at all if there is a nuclear disaster."
