The Final Days
By BENJAMIN ANASTAS
Published July 1, 2007

[EXCERPT]

The year 2012 first entered the public consciousness two decades ago this August with the Harmonic Convergence organized by José Arguelles, the author of a number of esoteric books about the Mayan cosmos and his experiences with telepathically received prophecies. With a penchant for promotion going back to the first Whole Earth Festival in 1970, which he organized, Arguelles promoted the convergence as an earth-changing event requiring 144,000 participants the number echoed Mayan mathematics and the Book of Revelation to free the planet from the dissonant influence of Western science and synchronize with the “wave harmonic of history” set to culminate in 2012. Mayan civilization, to Arguelles, was not entirely Mayan: It was originally a “terrestrial project” managed by a race of “galactic masters” from “star bases.” In the introduction to his book “Maya Cosmogenesis 2012: The True Meaning of the Maya Calendar End Date,”

John Major Jenkins describes his first visit to Tikal, the vast ruin in the Guatemalan rain forest that thrived as an urban center at the pinnacle of Mayan civilization. Jenkins, perhaps the most lucid figure in the subculture of 2012 prophets, writes of the “bone-jarring 16-hour bus ride on muddy and dangerous roads” that carried him to a “sprawling former metropolis” of pyramids, palaces, residences, ball-courts and scores of engraved monumental stones, or stelae, decorated with intricate, otherworldly images and hieroglyphs.

“Sitting on the stone steps of the Central Acropolis,” Jenkins recalls, “I looked around me at the towering sentinels of stone, their upper platforms stretching above the jungle canopy like altars to the stars, and I listened carefully to the wind whisper messages of a far-off time, and of another world.”

Jenkins wasn’t the first 22-year-old traveler with spiritual yearnings to encounter the sublime at a Mayan archaeological site, but he is one of the few who has found a life’s vocation in the process. As harmonically as Jenkins was struck in Guatemala by the larger mysteries of the Maya, however, it was the calendar that really seized him specifically the fact that there were Maya living in the highlands who still followed the same day count as their distant ancestors. (A common misconception is that the Maya “disappeared” when their cities emptied; there are six million Maya currently living in the states of Central America, a number far larger than population estimates of Mayan civilization during the Classic period.)

“Here was an unbroken tradition,” Jenkins told me when I went to visit him at his home in Windsor, Colo., one afternoon in late March. Influenced by the work of the pioneering psychedelic writer Terence McKenna whose Timewave Zero system, based on computer analysis of the I Ching, also shows history to be culminating on Dec. 21, 2012 Jenkins argues that ancient Maya “calendar priests” were able to chart a 26,000-year astronomical cycle called “the precession of the equinoxes” with the naked eye. He fixed the 2012 end date to coincide with a “galactic alignment” of the winter-solstice sun and the axis that modern astonomers draw to bisect the Milky Way, called the galactic equator.

In the alchemical tradition, Jenkins notes, eclipses signify the “transcending of the opposites.” During the period around 2012, Jenkins says, the galaxy will provide the opportunity for the rebirth of creation and a reconciliation of “infinity and finitude, time and eternity.” The Maya knew it, and just like an alarm clock, they set their calendar to coincide with the occasion.

I asked Jenkins how he viewed the passing of one world-age cycle into another in December 2012, and he paused. It was a little bit like asking a seismologist what he thinks about earthquakes.

“2012 is such a profound archetype,” Jenkins went on. “Here we are five and a half years before the date, and already there’s so much interest. Personally, I think it’s about transformation and renewal. It’s certainly nothing as simplistic as the end of the world.”

But what about the connection many people see between the approach of 2012 and environmental crisis? I asked. What about the popular link between the Maya and end-time prophecy? “A lot of people are talking about apocalypse right now,” he said, “but there’s a deeper meditation that can and should happen around the end date.”

It is a splendid, human-size dream, that an ancient people revered for unearthly wisdom could climb aboard a calendar ship and redeem us from our troubled world and the confines of our vexing natures. Dec. 21, 2012, is already here long before the date arrives and perhaps it has always been. End dates are not the stuff of fantasy, after all; each and every one of us has a terminal appointment inscribed in our calendars. And the end might just arrive sooner. Perhaps that is why we need to imagine a supernatural force with one eye on a ticking clock, waiting to make everything new again.

For the original New York Times article, see:

"According to the Inca perspective we are now entering the sixth world age, the sixth sun. This is consistent with the Aztec and Toltec beliefs. The Maya mark their world ages a bit differently. Their new sun, the fifth world age, will begin when their current calendar ends, December 21, 2012.

The critical point to remember is that each new sun, or world age was marked by a period of great transformation and cultural upheaval - a time that literally resulted in a shift of a cultural worldview. Some cultures actually believe that the light, the light coming from the sun, shifts in vibration, resulting in a literal new sun.

A new precessional cycle is a big deal. It only happens once every 25,800 years. The classical Maya who apparently were masters of large cycles of time, believed that a precessional cycle marked a specific time of spiritual evolution. Thus, a new cycle of spiritual evolution is now beginning as marked by their 2012 calendar end point.

Author John Major Jenkins points out that on December 21, 2012, the solstice our solar system will be in conjunction with the galactic center. This has not happened for 25,800 years. The center of the Milky Way, our galaxy may be a black hole from which all life in the galaxy originated. The Maya knew of its location and considered it our cosmic womb. Jenkins believes that the Mayan calendar and their current world age ends in 2012 because a new cycle of cosmic fertilization of humanity will begin with the new galactic conjunction. This will mark a time of spiritual rebirth and renewal for all of humanity, a golden age.

The prophecies speak of potential, not certainly. It all depends on us. One thing is clear, it has never been more important for each of us and for humanity as a whole to awaken."

An End of Days and The Sun is On the Cross
(C)2001 TimeCrystal

It is like a large check mark on the calendar. A pointer aimed at 13.0.0.0.0, the "End Date" of the Mayan Calendar. It is so significant that the calendar just comes to a stop. It's the longest short sheet of all time. This date is also known as December 21, 2012, the day of the Winter Solstice. But what is this check mark trying to tell us. What are we suppose to remember that day?

The Mayan calendar started in 3113 BC. But, most of the documents that would tell us what this calendar was for were destroyed long ago. In Mesoamerica, South Amaerica and on Easter Island, zealot priests destroyed almost all the written documents. The library at Alexandria in Egypt was distorted by fire. Almost all ancient books in China were destroyed on the order of a dying emperor.

Yet not all was lost. Writings on stone, lost to the world when the past was being destroyed, have since been found. In Mesopotamia were found thousands of clay tablets. On these tablets is the description of a society in which the government, economy and religion is controlled by one organization. This organization is a family of fallen gods . In Mesoamerica, the writings are on the temples, altars and other stone structures. Even better, in Mesoamerica, there still live the descendants of these ancient people. They have been practicing the rituals all along.

So here we are. Someone put this big check mark on the calendar. If there was a note telling us what the mark is for, it was destroyed with most of the history of the ancient world. So what is one to do? Look for clues..

THE HOW AND WHY OF THE MAYAN END DATE IN 2012 A.D.
by John Major Jenkins
¾ May 23rd, 1994

Originally published in the Dec-Jan '95 issue of Mountain Astrologer.

This essay is not contrived upon sketchy evidence. It basically rests upon two facts:

1) the well known end date of the 13-baktun cycle of the Mayan Long Count, which is December 21st, 2012 A.D. and

2) the astronomical situation on that day. Based upon these two facts alone, the creators of the Long Count knew about and calculated the rate of precession over 2300 years ago. I can conceive of no other conclusion. To explain this away as "coincidence" would only obscure the issue.

For early Mesoamerican skywatchers, the slow approach of the winter solstice sun to the Sacred Tree was seen as a critical process, the culmination of which was surely worthy of being called 13.0.0.0.0, the end of a World Age. The channel would then be open through the winter solstice doorway, up the Sacred Tree, the Xibalba be , to the center of the churning heavens, the Heart of Sky.

3) The Awful Secret by John Kaminski

Editor's Notes:

This issue begins with a Ruppert expose, and his ideas about what really happened regarding the midterm elections, and the US downward spiral fall from freedom. To save our democracy by 2004, I think we should particularly pay close attention to his critical analysis about suspect MS software, and his following statement:

"..And wasn't it convenient that Voters News Service decided at the last minute that there would be no exit polling this year. Exit polling was a reliable standard against which the numbers from the voting machines could be compared."

We also recommend going to Ruppert's site and reading his article on the Wellstone accident, or was it an accident? Ruppert claims that history suggests that it was an arranged "accident," he describes the inconsistencies of the crash, and that many are convinced of foul play," including two Representatives in Congress.

Such a matter of the arrangements for accidents is given confirmation by many with the Disclosure Project, (linked from flybynews.com) and reveals the sort of threats that you would think only comes from the X-files on TV.

Item 2 is an article that names those supporting a PR campaign to attack Iraq. Item 3 is a link to and about John Kaminski's "The Awful Secret," which is posted at paranoia.com. And for a change of pace, check out item 4, which is a small sampling of the phenomena marked by the ending of a 25,800 years cycle from a calendar that goes back to 3113 BC and has incredibly accurate astronomical projections.

November 7, Flyby News will be showing a video of the Kucinich Speech (at the Jones Library in downtown Amherst, MA, 7:00 P.M.) "We The People - SUMMIT FOR PEACE" -- (Burlington, VT, UVM, September 28, 2002). Following the video there will be a discussion on US democracy and responsibilities for safeguarding our planet. After reading Ruppert, we better start working harder in safeguarding Dennis K. and anyone else potentially effective in resisting loss of freedom and democracy, and letting the truth be known. Dennis K. will hopefully announce his candidacy soon, and of those that could succeed him. I encouraged this to Dennis, when speaking with him on the telephone, mentioning about the past record of assassinations, of which he was not afraid, and more concerned about what we could be losing as a nation and people. Now is the time to get Kucinich and others on board and to help get people registered to vote. Most of those who don't vote are more likely not to want to vote for war or other extreme conditions that makes life miserable. Our chance for freedom is sinking, but not dead, yet.

On the local side: Dennis Kucinich in his re-election for Congress in Ohio, received 74% of the vote (with 99% of Precincts reporting).

1) Ruppert: On the 2002 Midterm Elections

On the 2002 Midterm Elections
by Michael C. Ruppert

Nov. 7, 2002, 12:00 PST (FTW) -- There are a multitude of dangling questions about Tuesday's election results. Widespread anecdotal accounts of voting irregularities, disenfranchised voters and absolutely accurate and, in many cases, understated criticisms of abysmal leadership from Tom Daschle and the Democratic Party are not difficult to find. While pundits are trying to spin that the Republicans don't have a blank check, the fact is that they do and will now use every ounce of leverage they can squeeze onto it. I totally agree with James Carville -- a less than likeable, ruthless, crusty, hard-ball operative from the Clinton years -- who said last night, "The American people just don't have a clue as to what's coming."

As I write, the biggest transport ships operated by the Navy have already or are now setting sail for the Middle East, laden with main battle tanks and all the equipment necessary for invasion. At Ft. Hood, Texas elements of the III Armored Corps and the 1st Air Cavalry are quietly leaving in small detachments.

I have no doubt that the Homeland Security bill will be passed -- by any means necessary -- during the lame duck session of Congress which commences on Nov. 12. At that moment the government will enshrine a $37 billion bureaucracy that will have no other mission -- for the rest of its life -- than to find and destroy enemies of the state. For that reason alone -- a law of bureaucratic existence -- the list of enemies of the Homeland is compelled to forever grow as the definition of "enemies" is revised, and new evidence is found to justify their destruction. How else does a bureaucracy justify bigger budgets?

The Democratic Party is a shameful and laughable disgrace. In a world of hope the Green Party would seize this opportunity to enshrine and claim as its own all of the issues which the Democrats left unaddressed and laying in the dust of this election. I will not hold my breath.

The fear that exists in Washington must also be addressed. Sens. Leahy and Daschle got anthrax letters. Many, including this writer, believe that Paul Wellstone was murdered.* Cynthia McKinney was removed in a well orchestrated conspiracy which will be addressed in my forthcoming book, "Across the Rubicon."

On Aug. 27 I published an essay titled "No Way Out" in which I wrote, "And most of the American people, with their bankrupt and corrupt economy, will welcome cheap oil, while it lasts, and they will engage in a multitude of psychological and sickening rationales that will, in the end, amount to nothing more than saying, 'I don't care how many women and children you kill. Just let me keep my standard of living.'" As the Empire embarks on the occupation of the Middle East, to control the largest reserves of oil remaining on a planet that is coming to grips with the fact that oil is finite and depleting, the American people are on the threshold of getting a taste of what real sacrifice means.

The military occupation of Iraq (and Saudi Arabia) may come fairly quickly and be hailed as successes. But the prices that will be paid in casualties, economic expense and global hostility will be bitter and permanent pills for this Empire and its people. Homeland Security will provide Caesar with the means to permanently suppress any restlessness at home.

There was one other great message from this election. On Wednesday morning I watched a crawl on the bottom of the CNN news screen. It said, "Proprietary software may make inspection of electronic voting systems impossible." It was the final and absolute coronation of corporate rights over democracy; of money over truth; and of man's self-destructive fears over the best parts of the human heart.

I note with irony the fact that much of the new software to resolve voting issues is either created by Microsoft and/or the companies that own and sell the voting machines, including one with investments from the Rothschild family. These are the same firms connected to the election debacle of 2000. Some even have Bush family connections. And here we see the final purpose of the 2000 Florida voting scandals: In order to prevent the same kind of hanging-chad confusion, we now have electronic machines so the problem won't occur again, and the results have been forever totally removed from public scrutiny.

And wasn't it convenient that Voters News Service decided at the last minute that there would be no exit polling this year. Exit polling was a reliable standard against which the numbers from the voting machines could be compared.

Some will take issue with me and say, "Mike, how can you blame the American people and say that the voting machines are rigged at the same time?" Easy, I answer. Today there was nobody in the streets. There was no public outcry. There was no revolt or outrage. All that has happened is that one more time a people has avoided responsibility and retreated in the hope that some other half-measured, half-willed, half-hearted, childish tactic will produce results in a world that no longer exists ... and probably hasn't for a long, long time.

2) New champions of the war cause

New champions of the war cause
By Jim Lobe
Inter Press News Service

WASHINGTON - A small group of influential right-wingers with close ties to the offices of Pentagon chief Donald Rumsfeld and Vice President Dick Cheney will this week launch a new political campaign to rally public support for the invasion of Iraq.

The task may not be easy: according to a recent survey, public support for invading Iraq has fallen from highs of close to 80 percent earlier this year to between 52 percent and 60 percent, and less than one half of the respondents opposed taking unilateral action if US allies were not on board.

The Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, which is setting up its office on Capitol Hill this week, plans to announce its formal launch next week, according to its president, Randy Scheunemann, a veteran Republican Senate foreign policy staffer who until recently worked as a consultant to Rumsfeld on Iraq policy.

The committee appears to be a spin-off of the Project for a New American Century (PNAC), a front group consisting mainly of neo-conservative Jews and heavy-hitters from the Christian right, whose public recommendations on fighting the war against terrorism and US backing for Israel in the conflict in the occupied territories have anticipated to a remarkable degree the administration's own policy course.

Scheunemann, who is best known for drafting the 1998 Iraq Liberation Act that authorized (US) $98 million for the Iraqi National Congress (INC), a loose coalition of Iraqi dissidents that is widely distrusted by the State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency, said that he was still putting together the group's board of advisers.

So far, Bruce P Jackson, a vice president at arms maker Lockheed Martin, who chaired the Republican Party's subcommittee for national security and foreign policy when George W Bush ran for president in 2000, has signed on as chairman.

Other officers include Gary Schmitt, PNAC's executive director, and Julie Finley, a prominent Republican fund-raiser who worked with Jackson when he served as president of the US Committee to Expand NATO, as well as former secretary of state George Shultz, who strongly supports ousting Iraqi President Saddam Hussein through US unilateral action, if necessary.

Former Democratic Senator Bob Kerrey and retired General Wayne Downing, a former INC lobbyist who worked on Bush's National Security Council as its top counter-terrorism official until abruptly resigning last summer, have also agreed to serve as advisers.

Aside from its close association with PNAC (whose website is one of only two links featured on its website - www.liberationiraq.org , the new committee appears to be based on a model that came to prominence before the previous Gulf War in 1991.

The Committee for Peace and Security in the Gulf (CPSG), whose membership was drawn from a similar mix of prominent neo-conservatives and other right-wing hawks, worked closely with both Bush Senior's administration and a second group financed by the Kuwaiti monarchy, called Citizens for a Free Kuwait.

CPSG received a large grant from the Wisconsin-based Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, a major funder of both the PNAC and the closely related American Enterprise Institute (AEI).

As recently as 1998, the CPSG called in an open letter to then president Bill Clinton for Washington to adopt a "comprehensive political and military strategy for bringing down Saddam and his regime", centered on support for the INC and US air power.

That 1998 letter was signed by many of the charter members of the PNAC, including Rumsfeld, and four of his top deputies at the Pentagon, Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith, Dov Zakheim and Peter Rodman. Other signatories included the current ultra-unilateralist undersecretary of state for arms control and international strategy, John Bolton, Schmitt and several AEI "scholars", including the current chairman of the Defense Policy Board, Richard Perle.

The PNAC's two co-founders, William Kristol, editor of Rupert Murdoch's The Weekly Standard, and neo-conservative commentator Robert Kagan, also signed the letter.

In 1999, many of the same figures also created the Balkan Action Committee (BAC) in support of NATO's Kosovo campaign against Serbia. Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld and Perle all served on BAC's executive committee which, like the CPSG, published open letters to the president and took out ads in major newspapers, like the New York Times and the Washington Post.

The new committee, according to its mission statement, "was formed to promote regional peace, political freedom and international security by replacing the Saddam Hussein regime with a democratic government that respects the rights of the Iraqi people and ceases to threaten the community of nations". It "will engage in educational advocacy efforts to mobilize US and international support for policies aimed at ending the aggression of Saddam Hussein and freeing the Iraqi people from tyranny". Scheunemann told Inter Press Service that the group would concentrate its efforts on the media "both in the US and in Europe".

Jackson's position as the committee's chairman is notable because senior executives in the defense industry have generally shunned the limelight, particularly in citizens' or lobby groups that promote wars, lest they be painted by the media as "merchants of death". A former military intelligence officer in the US Army, Jackson worked in the office of both Frank Carlucci and Dick Cheney when they served as defense secretaries under former presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush Sr. After a brief stint as an investment banker for Lehman Brothers in New York, he joined the defense industry, rising to his current post as vice president for strategy and planning at Lockheed Martin.

An outspoken champion of Taiwan, Jackson came to public prominence as head of the US Committee to Expand NATO, which lobbied Congress in favor of the greatest possible eastward expansion of new NATO members, a lucrative new market for major arms sales for Lockheed Martin, as well as five other big US military contractors.

Working with him was Steve Hadley, an assistant secretary of defense under Bush Sr and currently George W Bush's deputy national security adviser. At the time, Hadley worked for Shea and Gardner, a law firm that represents Lockheed Martin. More recently, the PNAC's deputy director, Tom Donnelly, joined Lockheed Martin, but was then assigned to the AEI, where he reportedly works with Perle.

3) The Awful Secret by John Kaminski

The Awful Secret
The objective of the Bush cabal and the war in Iraq is to get control of all of the oil before the blackouts start!
John Kaminski

How stupid are Americans - and how false are their elected representatives - to believe and actually repeat the thought that a far-off nation with the world's second-largest oil reserves, a battered and constrained nation that had already witnessed hundreds of thousands of its citizens killed by the United States, that this bedraggled and helpless nation is actually a threat deserving a full-scale invasion by American troops?

How stupid are Americans not to see that all this war talk is a diversionary tactic, a red herring meant to cover up crimes of the American government: widespread corruption that robbed Americans of billions of dollars in scandals named Harken, Enron and Halliburton; a meaningless genocidal attack on Afghanistan that failed to achieve its stated objective yet killed 5,000 innocent people; and an attack on American soil that killed another 3,000 Americans. In the meantime, the highest levels of the U.S. government work diligently to cover up the brutal facts that highly placed officials knew this atrocity was going to happen and did nothing to stop it. In fact, they wanted it to happen because it served their purposes...

john,

i appreciate your article, and if okay, i would like to take parts out to use, and link to the full article. however, i believe it misses its mark in one part, in the paranoia of electrical power generation stoppage. many technologies are there to replace fossil fuels for electricity.. and biomass is an important one, which is self sustaining. haven't you scope my site and linked to stirling engine work? instead of the oil squeeze, i think, it is the tech and brain squeeze as they know our world is on a collision course, and they want to be in command to the end. and fear rules them, and they rule with fear. that is why i put such stock in kucinich, since he operates with universal love, a light in the darkness.. thanks for all the sharings and networkings..!

John Kaminski writes:

Jonathan,
Yes, I've received that comment from others, including Rense, although if you read what Duncan says about the percentage of volume for oil (42%) to coal (1%) used for generating electricity, you can envision what new kind of disaster would be created by relying on coal. The percentages just aren't close; oil is used ubiquitously, and without it, whole new kinds of environmental disasters would result. Plus, use of coal and/or hydrogen to generate electricity and power planes and cars is frighteningly undeveloped; the cash costs of transition would delay its widespread implementation for decades, during which time, blackouts would occur. Obviously, I agree with what Duncan says, although the effect might not be as total as he suggests, in my opinion.

Yes, utilize from it what you need, and keep up the good work. I think Kucinich should be wearing a flak jacket and not flying. Being mostly unmechanical, I haven't read as much about the Stirling engine as I need, and will endeavor to tackle it again.
