1) Report on October 13 and Beyond from the Global Network
Mon, 15 Oct 2001 20:46:11 -0400

Friends:

Reports are still coming in from October 13 protests around the world but we have some exciting news to report. We are grateful to all who worked so hard to organize events, especially under the extraordinary circumstances following September 11. Most actions integrated the issues of space weapons and the Central Asian War. We ended up with 115 local actions in 19 countries.

We've been putting the reports, with some great photos, on our website so be sure to check them out at: http://www.space4peace.org

Here is a sampling of numbers that we have heard about:

* Adelaide, Australia (600 people in the rain)
* Amherst, MA (200)
* Arcata, CA (200)
* Ft Meade, MD (4 arrested at NSA HQ)
* Berlin, Germany (50,000)
* Stuttgart, Germany (25,000)
* Hiroshima, Japan (20)
* Isahaya City, Japan (16)
* Kennedy Space Center, Florida (80)
* London, England (50,000)
* Vandenberg AFB, CA (65)
* Los Angeles, CA (300)
* Dublin, Ireland (Letter taken to U.S. Embassy opposing Star Wars)
* Tokyo, Japan (80)
* Stockholm, Sweden (50 at U.S. Embassy, 4,000 at peace march)
* Menwith Hill, England (250)
* Cape Cod, MA (100)
* Cleveland, OH (200)
* Chennai, India (public meeting)
* Fylingdales, England (peace walk and vigil)
* Andover, MA (40)
* Woodstock, N.Y. (50)
* Fairbanks, AL (50)
* Tucson, AZ (150)
* Perth, Australia (400)
* Buckley AFB, CO (106)
* Munich, Germany (400)
* Ithaca, N.Y. (85)

In Cleveland, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) announced, at our Keep Space for Peace conference (sponsored by the Global Network & Cleveland Peace Action), that he has introduced the "Space Preservation Act of 2001" (HR 2977) that calls for the banning of all weapons in space and would outlaw all research and development for space-based weapons. Rep. Kucinich told the assembled that "We need to believe in ourselves and our ability to change things...We have to work on transforming the consciousness of the country. War is not inevitable," Kucinich said.

As a follow-up to October 13 we would like to recommend some of the following ideas for on-going action for space organizing.

1) Build support for the Kucinich ban on weapons in space bill by sending local delegations to meet with your Congressperson. (Ask them to have a copy of his bill available when you meet.) For people overseas, ask your government to support a global ban on weapons in space at the United Nations.

2) Letters to editor of local papers.

3) Meet with local religious leaders and ask them to preach about the need to ban war in the heavens.

4) Outreach to local labor unions and labor federations making the point that funding for Star Wars will cut into other community needs like education, health care, day care funding, social security, etc...

5) Organize a local conference on the issue of Star Wars and how space will be used to control space and the Earth below.

6) Contact the Global Network and arrange for a speaker from our speakers bureau.

7) Send a representative from your community to the Global Network's 10th annual international membership meeting that will be held in Berkeley, California on May 10-12, 2002.

Many thanks again to all and best wishes.

2) Online Fax -- Peace in Space

Dear friends,

If you want an easy way to contact your elected representatives and world leaders in support of peace in space -- follow the links to the website for the Institute for Cooperation in Space (ICIS) "Online Fax" (located at their left sidebar) http://www.peaceinspace.com/

A modified letter follows, or use the letter online, or your own creation, but please appeal to the U.S. Congress, world leaders, and letters to editors to support the Space for Preservation Act of 2001.

= = = = = = = = = = =

I am respectfully writing to request your support for the ban of all space-based weapons, development and research. This will not only help the US continue to honor the Anti Ballistic Missile and other treaties for the peaceful use of outer space, but it could enable a prosperous transformation for industries now benefitting from war, to a new era of benign space activity and commerce. Of course this could only be feasible unless we care for the natural environment on Earth, as well.

On October 2, 2001, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Cleveland), introduced into the House of Representatives of the United States the Space Preservation Act of 2001, a bill to permanently ban space-based weapons: "to preserve the cooperative uses of space for the benefit of all humankind by permanently prohibiting the basing of weapons in space by the United States, and to require the President to take actions to adopt and implement a world treaty banning space-based weapons."

Instead of building space-based weapons, we propose the building of world cooperative space ventures including space habitats, stations, hospitals, schools, industries, laboratories, farms, elevators, hotels and resorts, and craft to travel the universes to learn more about ourselves and our neighbors.

We call for a halt to research and development (R&D), testing, production, manufacturing and deployment of all space-based weapons. This will not disrupt the economy. It will stimulate the economy, jobs and training programs. The largest R&D program in history is now mandated to weaponize space. Removing that mandate to weaponize space will not stop the R&D, but it will stop the R&D intended for space-based weaponry. This will free the industry to create technologies and services that will provide the greatest of benefits and opportunities to all world citizens. The space-based weapons industry will be transformed into a civil, military and commercial space industry without weapons in space.

We oppose the weaponization of space, not the militarization of space. Militaries are not going to disappear. They are well skilled and organized, and have non-space-based weapons roles to play now and after the ban on space-based weapons law is passed.

National and world security will be based on cooperation, on information sharing, on technology development and applications of technology and information services that will solve urgent and potential human and environmental problems.

Please respond immediately to this vital opportunity, and make a statement in support of signing an agreement to ban all space-based weapons. There is still time for a transformation, to change the course from where we are headed to a more sustainable approach. Please act and support the Preservation of Space Act of 2001 to make peace more possible for our future.

Thank you.

The film will be followed with a presentation by Disclosure Project Director, Steven M. Greer, M.D. and guest witnesses (in Canada). The lecture will highlight how the Campaign for Disclosure is working to:

* achieve open congressional hearings so that over 400 military witnesses may testify
* end illegal secrecy related to UFOs and Extraterrestrial Intelligence
* release Advance Energy and Propulsion systems that will end pollution, solve the energy crisis and end our reliance on foreign oil sources.
* ban weapons from space
